South Africa has one of the most turbulent histories in the world, for many years races were unjustly segregated, and people of colour were forced into subordinate positions within society. This year marks forty years since the Soweto Uprising, an event that many regard as the start of the visual revolt against Apartheid. In honour of that milestone, Oratorio of a Forgotten Youth opens at the Artscape Opera House for one night only, in commemoration of all those brave students that lost their lives during the uprising.
The show will explore and reflect upon the actions and events of that fateful day forty years ago. The Soweto Uprising changed the course of South African history by getting the stones rolling that eventually knocked the Apartheid government onto its knees.
This show will present musical performances, poetic readings and theatrical monologues. The showcase will feature an orchestra, choir and many talented musical performers. Some of the monologues being presented were written during the Uprising, and some were written with the historical relevance of the Uprising in mind.
Oratorio of a Forgotten Youth: Musical Reflections on the Youth of ’76 is directed by Mandla Mbothwe, with Mandla Mlangeni acting as head composer and conductor. Mlangeni will be joined on stage by Dizo Plaatjies, Lesego Rampolokeng, Brydon Bolton, Mark Fransman and many more. The two ladies leading the show are none other than Thembi Mtshali-Jones and Bo Petersen.
