Oranjefeest Festival in Cape Town

Bring your orange A game and celebrate all things Dutch and South African at this family-friendly fair on Hout Bay beach

This Freedom Day, wave goodbye to your pale, boring clothes in favour of some infinitely brighter glad rags and enjoy the coming together of Dutch and South African cultures at the fabulous Oranjefeest festival. Grab your orange wig, sunscreen and sunglasses and head to Hout Bay Beach on the public holiday of Monday, 27 April 2015 for a fair featuring family fun, crowns and kroketten.

Have you ever wondered why once a year Dutch folk don their national colour, float between flea market stalls, eat delicious traditional fare, play games and dance on brightly coloured boats? No, they’re not paying homage to gingers.  Actually, this behaviour has nothing to do with the much-mocked hair hue and everything to do with celebrating the Dutch king and the history of the great House of Orange (The royal family of the Netherlands). And because this national festival is coming to Cape Town this year, you too can now join in the fun.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2015 ORANJEFEEST FESTIVAL IN CAPE TOWN

GIVE ORANGE SOME LOVE: Let’s be honest, it’s not regularly that you have an excuse to rock an all-orange outfit, so this is your opportunity to give an often-overlooked colour some love. Go all out, clothe yourself to look like a carrot and if you dress the best, you could win dinner for four at the Zepi Grill Bar at the Sun Square Cape Town Hotel.  Don’t stress if you don’t own any orange paraphernalia; there will be an array of tangerine items, including cute tiaras for little princesses, for sale at the festival.

LEARN ABOUT DUTCH CULTURE: This is the first time that Oranjefeest will be celebrated in Mzansi on this scale, and the organisers hope that the fair will introduce Dutch culture to people who have never experienced it before and help those of Netherlands origin who are now living in Cape Town to feel at home.

GREAT GAMES FOR KIDS: Whether you’re a young’un or just a kid at heart, there will be plenty of exciting traditional Dutch games at the festival to keep you on your toes. Ever heard of zaklopen? It’s Holland’s equivalent of a standard sack race – hop into a big bag and jump as quickly as you can to the finish line. Other activities include munching tasty gingerbread off a string and a game called spijkerpoepen, which involves trying to lower a nail that’s tied to your waist into a bottle using only your hips. Not only will this all be good fun for participants, but it also promises much hilarity for spectators.

A FABULOUS FLEA MARKET: Skip between stalls at a fantastic bazaar that’s set to sell numerous local wares in all shapes and forms. There’ll be everything from garage sale-style booths to artisanal stands, so you’re bound to find something special to take home.

DID WE MENTION THE FOOD? Dutch culture is famous for many things, not least of all its food. Expect all the traditional favourites, including crispy kroketten, meaty frikandellen, fried patatje and mini pancake-like poffertjes. Come hungry because you’re going to want to taste it all!

SPORTY FUN IN THE SUN: Aside from all the games, there will also be a number of sport events taking place over the course of the day, including volleyball and football tournaments and five-a-side soccer. So, get your teams together and make the most of the beauteous beach.

DRINKS AND BIG SCREENS AT DUNES RESTAURANT: This popular Hout Bay eatery and bar will be selling cold beers all day and will live stream all the Oranjefeest festivities taking place in Holland on the same day on four massive screens so that you can celebrate in style alongside your Dutch counterparts.

WIN THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME TO AMSTERDAM: If you’ve always dreamed of whisking yourself away to Amsterdam to discover just what makes this splendid city so special, then this could be your opportunity. Once you purchase a ticket to the festival, you can enter the raffle to win awesome prizes, including a trip to the Netherlands’ capital courtesy of KLM airlines, and a two night stay for two people at the Sun Square Cape Town Hotel.

DANCE THE DAY AWAY TO LIVE MUSIC: One of the biggest draw-cards to the festival is undoubtedly its line-up which includes a selection of big names, both local and hollering from Holland. Ever heard of a not-so-little live act called the Rudimentals? Yes? If you’re a musical connoisseur, it’s time to book those tickets!
