Street Art To Green Spaces: Bellville Comes Alive With Open Streets 2018

Experience the third annual car-free public event in one of Cape Town’s most heritage-rich suburbs

Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT)  will be transforming the streets of Bellville into a public space for pedestrians on Sunday 25 November 2018. This is the third edition of the 2018/19 Open Streets programme, with other events taking place in the City Centre (January 2019), Langa (February 2019) and Mitchell’s Plain (March 2019).

WHERE AND WHAT IS OPEN STREETS
This celebration of public space will take place on a closed section of Voortrekker Road and, in collaboration with the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), will bring people together to enjoy the car-free public space from 9am to 2pm.

“Open Streets in Bellville offers a great opportunity for Cape Town’s residents to be active participants in experiencing the unifying potential of their community. On 25 November, we will all be able to experience what an inclusive, safe and welcoming city looks like when the public get the chance to reimagine their space, know their neighbours, and carry this fun and thought-provoking experience forward,” said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

WHAT TO DO AND SEE
The activities are open and free to the public, from games and exhibitions to performances and street sports, there is plenty to do and see. Check out the Falko1 mural featuring his trademark elephants in the car park behind the Eskom building on the corner of Charl Malan street and Voortrekker Road, stroll through the recently refurbished Elizabeth Park, grab a plate of something tasty from one of the food vendors on the Open Streets route and more. There’ll be cycling for kids with ABCD Concepts, Pedal Power Association and BEN Bikes, street soccer, netball and other sports, plus a short performance by YoungstaCPT. The monthly Bellville Market will also take place at the same time on Teddington Walkway.

HOW TO GET THERE
Open Streets encourages all those attending to make use of public transport, join the bike bus from the city centre, or carpool. There’ll also be secure parking at Church Square opposite SARS on Teddington Road. What is the bike bus, you ask? Keep it eco and cycle to Bellville from the city centre. Contact Sindile for more details at sindile@openstreets.co.za.

ABOUT OPEN STREETS CAPE TOWN
OSCT was founded in 2012 through the collaboration of volunteers seeking a safer, more inclusive and vibrant city. It’s an NPO that’s committed to creating shared public spaces that inspire respect, integration, tolerance and insight into the way our city is designed. It’s based on the 40-year-old global initiative initially sparked by Colombia’s national recreational programme that turns 120km of streets spanning the city into car-free zones. The OSCT works with the City of Cape Town and welcomes public involvement and participation.

Entry is free – simply arrive at the street and get ready for a great time with the community. If you want to be involved in the planning process, attend the public meetings scheduled on the Openstreets.org.za website, or host an activity, then email info@openstreets.co.za or phone +27 (0)21 286 0823.
