Oceana Hout Bay Seafood Festival

Come celebrate Hout Bay’s seafood delights and seaside charm

Living on Western Cape’s gorgeous coast means you get the pick of what the sea has to offer, and the inaugural Oceana Hout Bay Seafood Festival intends on showcasing just that. This first-time foodie fiesta is a decentralised event that runs from Wednesday, 24 (Heritage Day) to Sunday, 28 September 2014 and that aims to not only put Hout Bay on the map as a seafood mecca but also to showcase the seaside village’s local talent across a number of disciplines.

So while the extravaganza will primarily shine the spotlight on the yummy fruits of the ocean, festival-goers can also look forward to cooking demos, craft beer stalls, arts and crafts exhibitions, live music concerts, workshops and more at the main festivalground and at a number of venues across the small republic.

For the full programme you can visit OceanaHoutBaySeafoodFestival.com; alternatively, have a look below at what you can expect at this exciting festival.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 OCEANA HOUT BAY SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

CULINARY DELIGHTS: The festival aims to display some of Hout Bay’s clout as a seafood capital through a central market and chef demonstrations. The main festival area, which hosts much of the live music and gives a temporary home to food, wine and craft beer vendors, will be operating from 10am to 10pm just behind the Lookout Deck restaurant, adjacent to the National Sea and Rescue Institute (NSRI). The chef demonstrations call on the suburb’s local kitchen whizzes to whip up delicious signature seafood dishes using SASSI green-listed species within the festival tent, creating culinary delights made from sustainable resources. Locals from the Hout Bay community will also be creating their own signature cultural dishes, providing that authentic seaside twist to seafood dishes.

ARTS, CRAFTS, WORKSHOPS: The main festivalground will host several arts and crafts stalls over the weekend, and the programme includes an array of creative events at various Hout Bay locations to boot. If you’re more inclined to buy beautiful artworks, then be sure to check out the free exhibitions featuring the work of the Hout Bay Artists Society, amongst many others.  Dance workshops will also be on offer to get that heart rhythm going. The workshops are available for a variety of skill levels and dance genres.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT: Music lovers are in for a treat as the festival features live performances across a number of genres. Fans can take in the array of local talent in the Hout Bay’s Got Talent competition or get their fix watching the folk quartet Sons of Settlers, alternative rockers McCree, renowned guitarist James Grace and more. Plus, in celebration of Heritage Day, a free lively music concert is scheduled on Wednesday, 24 September in the festival tent. Not to mention, a double bill comprised of comedian and magician Peter G and blues guitarist Albert Frost will provide patrons with an entertaining show on Saturday, 27 September. Finally, if you’re keen to wind down and enjoy some chilled vibes with a view, then the free Music in the Park concert will be a perfect choice. Get there from around 11am on Sunday, 28 September.

JUST FOR KIDS: Kids are spoilt for choice at the Oceana Seafood Festival as the Two Oceans Aquarium brings forth their entertaining and educational puppet show. The Two Oceans Mobile Unit also comes through, bringing the educational activities outdoors with a fully equipped mobile aquarium. Little ones can also join in on the culinary fun with the Little Chefs competition, an event that shows them how to make their favourite seafood dishes.

ENERGETIC ACTIVITIES: Whether you like to take a slow stroll along the beach or prefer a bit of sporting activity, the festival has you covered. Most notably, there will be a Lucky Star five-a-side soccer tournament for all age groups, with 40 teams competing over the weekend for a grand prize of R3000. Teams will have to register on Saturday, 20 September, and the fee is R500 per team.

TICKETS FOR THE 2014 OCEANA HOUT BAY SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

Entry to The Oceana Hout Bay Seafood Festival’s main festivalground is free, but to enter the main tent, where chef demos and live music will take place, it costs R30p/p for adults and R10p/p for kids per day.

Also, as the affair is a decentralised event with different venues offering different activities on the programme, most occasions have their own set entry fee and may require that you book a spot beforehand.

Tickets for these events are available online through Webtickets.co.za or at the door on the day or by contacting the specific organiser as listed on the programme; prices range from R20p/p to R150p/p depending on the event you choose to attend.
