Night of 1000 Drawings Cape Town Exhibition

Get one-of-a-kind art for only R100 at this community-driven drawing project's one-night showcase

“As my artist's statement explains, my work is utterly incomprehensible and is therefore full of deep significance” - Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbes.

If you’ve ever wanted to purchase an original work of art and support a good cause, now’s your chance to knock two birds with one stone. Scores of Mother City-based creatives hauled out their art supplies and A5 canvases, got creative and submitted one-of-a-kind artworks to be showcased and sold at the Night of 1000 Drawings Cape Town Exhibition at the Good Hope Centre on Thursday, 28 August 2014.

While many of us believe that our scribbles, sketches and stick-men are not quite show quality, the lovely people from 1000 Drawings Cape Town think otherwise. Through a series of doodle-drawing sessions hosted in the Cape and a call for submissions, this Mother-City-based fundraising collective will showcase a number of pieces, courtesy of regular citizens, artists, celebrities, companies, agencies and stick-men specialists, at the one-night showcase; each work of art costs R100.

More than just an exhibit, the Thursday night affair will also feature a line-up of local musos, installations, doodle battle sessions, VJs and so much more. Not to mention, art lovers can also fill up at the food market and a cash bar.

The 1000 Drawings Cape Town campaign was chosen to be an official World Design Capital 2014 (WDC2014) project because the purpose of the drawing drive is to effect social upliftment through design. Funds raised through the exhibition and art sale will go towards creating a favorable learning environment for pupils at the Thomas Wildschutt School in Retreat with the help of social enterprises, like Greenpop, See-Saw-Do and H.E.L.P.

TICKETS FOR THE 2014 NIGHT OF 1000 DRAWINGS CAPE TOWN EXHIBITION

Tickets to the exhibition cost R100p/p and entitle the bearer to one artwork and access to the exhibition; tickets are available online via Quicket.co.za and at the door on the day. Do note that submissions for the exhibition close on Wednesday, 20 August 2014 and for those who cannot make it to the last doodle sessions, artists can submit their works via post or drop them off at a number of collection points across the city; visit 1000DrawingsCT.co.za for more information.

Also, if you’d still like to attend the exhibition but can’t afford to purchase an art piece contact 1000drawingsCT@gmail.com with a short motivation. Alternatively, those who’d like to lend a helping hand can also volunteer at the showcase; contact organisers on the aforementioned email address.

MORE ABOUT THE 1000 DRAWINGS INITIATIVE & CAMPAIGN

This innovative community-driven fundraiser was born out of a need to help feed thousands of homeless people in Johannesburg in 2006 when the Paballo ya Batho (it means ‘caring for the people’ in Sotho) soup kitchen’s bakkie was stolen. Based on a similar but commercial event in New York, 1000 Drawings has quickly become a national and global movement with doodling exhibits hosted in major cities across Mzansi as well as in Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Tuscany, Belgium and Dubai.
