My Naam is Februarie - Identities Rooted in Slavery

View a historically significant calendar and listen to audiobooks in remembrance of the forgotten history of the South African Slave Trade

South Africa, and Cape Town in particular, is a very colourful and diverse society laden with endless possibilities and people who are filled with hopes and dreams. However, in order to know where you are going, you first need to know where you came from.

Lest we forget the inhumane discrimination which was rife in our country’s history. We have constant reminders from museums and various books, depicting and educating our youth on how our society was formed and why it is important to remember their history in order to forge a brighter future, eradicating a mentality that has seen our predecessors segregated.

This historical journey will be hosted by the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum from Friday, 21 October 2016 to Friday, 31 March 2017. The Slave Lodge Museum will be featuring a new exhibition, which has been conceptualized by Gavin Wood of Geometry Global and photographed by David Prior, highlighting the loss of identity through the use of a calendar and will be on display in the Wilberforce Room.

Slavery, deplorably, became part of Cape Town’s historical identity during 1653 to 1856. During this period, majority of the slaves were brought in from, predominantly, Indian Ocean countries and upon their arrival, were stripped of everything that belonged to them, including their previous identities. After the discarding of their identities, the slaves were given names according to the months in which they arrived.

This project outlines the descendants of these slaves to tell the stories of their ancestors, which is accompanied by audio books and images to give the present generation some invaluable insight into an event that is deeply etched into Cape Town’s social DNA.

The Slave lodge has been used for many different purposes over it’s 300 year history. The lodge was used to house slaves where they would be prepared and then subsequently auctioned off to slave drivers, during an illogical period in our world’s history. Now that you’ve got the 411 on what to expect, don’t shy away from educating yourself and gaining invaluable knowledge that could inspire a shift in your perspective, by helping you understand what has shaped our beloved Cape Town’s society.
