EARTHBOX is a first-of-its-kind ...
Experience an immersive sensory journey into the depths of the earth
Audiophiles, entertainers and film score producers take heed: the only place that you need to be from Friday, 7 to Saturday, 8 March 2014 is at Cape Town’s City Hall for Music Exchange, a two-day programme of industry-related keynote talks, panel discussions and workshops. This year’s event will be opened by hip-hop artist and actor Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) and also features a number of bigwigs, like German producer Tim Renner, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse and composer Dr Trevor Jones.
Started in 2009 by long-standing publicist Martin Myers and Managing Director of Musketeer Records Peter Lacey, the conference aims to give up-and-coming artists, composers and promoters first-hand insights into the entertainment industry from heavyweights who have been in the business for many years. This year’s event also includes a film focus as part of an effort to further build global and African partnerships across creative industries.
In other words, get set for an intense line-up of talks and panel discussions headed by some of South Africa’s most successful creatives, like South African-born Hollywood composer (for movies including Notting Hill, The Last of the Mohicans and Excalibur) Dr Trevor Jones, the legendary Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse and PJ Powers, amongst others; workshops and interactive sessions with pioneering UK DJ/producer Charles Webster and Cape Town’s own Dino Michael are also on the bill. Not to mention, Mos Def will be talking about his successful crossover from music to film – he has movies like The Italian Job and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on his impressive CV. Delegates will also get to discuss and share ideas on everything from working in Africa and multimedia distribution mechanisms to rights protection and how to stand out in the cluttered market.
“Music Exchange is essential for anyone in the industry who wants to connect with the correct stakeholders – be it in electronic dance music, digital trends, entering the live music scene or learning how to generate new income streams,” says Mabuse, who is also the conference chairperson.
In short, the music indaba will offer indispensible information and networking opportunities to anyone serious about furthering their career and is a definite not-to-be-missed to-do on Cape Town’s creative events calendar.
