Monotype Workshop at Warren Editions

Learn the art of creating stunning painted monotypes at this creative workshop

Learn the techniques of oil- and water-based monotype prints from professional artists at the Warren Editions studio on Roeland Street. The Monotype Workshops will take place every Saturday from 21 January to 11 February 2017, and will run for six hours from 9am to 3pm. The space is limited to eight participants only, so don’t delay.

Monotype differs from other printing techniques in that a high quality, once-off print is created from an original painting. Other techniques allow the artist to create multiple (often simpler) prints from an etching or plate that can then form a series. These unique replicas convey the same artistic expression and personality that the artist created on the original painting with their brush strokes and daubs.

So, if you’re looking to broaden your artistic repertoire through exploring new mediums, or you simply want an insight into how professional studios operate and create prints, then these workshops will be just the solution. The prints that participants will create will be roughly A4 in size, and they will have to bring their own source materials and visual references for their paintings. All the prints can be taken home at the end of the workshops.

ACTIVITIES AT EACH 2017 MONOTYPE WORKSHOP AT WARREN EDITIONS

Session 1 (Saturday, 21 January 2017): Instructor Zhané Warren will explain what a monotype is, and why it differs from a monoprint. Participants will try their hand at reductive, additive and trace monotype methods. To end off, guests will then set to work on creating their own monotypes from their own visual references and images.

Session 2 (Saturday, 28 January 2017): Zhané will recap on the first session, and then discuss the monotype’s richness, versatility and merits. She will then demonstrate the layering aspect of the prints, whereby the artists print over existing impressions. Guests will try their hand at layering over works created in the first session.

Session 3 (Saturday, 4 February 2017): Instructor Kate Arthur will explain what a water-based monotype is, and how it differs to oil-based prints. She will demonstrate the Warren Editions watercolour paints and how they compare to tube paints from other manufacturers. The participants will then prepare a PVC monotype with the watercolours.

Session 4 (Saturday, 11 February 2017): Kate will recap on the third session, and then discuss the water-based monotype’s richness, versatility and merits. She will then demonstrate the layering aspect of the water-based prints. Participants will try their hand at layering over works created in the third session.
