What could be better than taking a sandy stroll for a great cause? On Youth Day (Thursday, 16 June), families and friends are invited to meet at the NSRI Station 18, on Beach Road, to enjoy a refreshing wander in the crisp morning air.
Listen to the gulls cry as they fly by as you walk along the soft, glittering sand and listen to the mellifluous waves stroking the shore, all the while knowing that your brief stint of exercise is going miles to bring smiles to kids affected by cleft palates.
The event is presented by Miltons Matsemela on behalf of Cipla, and aims to raise funds for the Miles for Smiles Foundation, which was created to assist Operation Smile. Operation Smile is an incredible initiative that sees doctors and volunteers travelling to remote places to operate on children born with cleft palates. Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft palate, and every one in 10 of the kids born with this affliction will die before their first birthday. Operation Smile was formed in 1982 and has treated over 4000 children since 2006 – it only takes a 45 minute surgery to correct a cleft lip and change a child’s life. And that’s exactly what your race entry fee will go towards – namely, to covering the costs of two corrective surgeries.
Both 3-km and 6-km routes are available and the event begins at 10am, with medals for all finishers, and prizes for the winners in the primary and high school categories. There’ll also be lucky draws on the day, giveaways, and coffee and breakfast for sale. What better way to spend Youth Day than by raising funds to make a significant difference to a child’s life?
TICKETS FOR THE 2016 MILES FOR SMILES BEACH WALK AND RUN IN CAPE TOWN
Tickets cost R30 for the 3-km and R60 for the 6-km race. The race commences from the NSRI in Melkbosstrand at 10am, and tickets are available online from Entryninja.com.
