Girls (and guys), prep your handy bag-o’-bras and get ready to fling unmentionables at sexy soul crooner Maxwell during his one-night-only concert at Cape Town’s GrandWest on Thursday, 5 December 2013. The two–time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter and producer promises to set the Mother City alight with his signature honey-soaked voice and sizzling good looks.
The last time the chisel-faced performer was in Mzansi he was showcasing unheard tracks from the now critically acclaimed and universally loved album BLACKSummers’Night, which is the first in a trilogy (the second disc is scheduled for 2014 release). Needless to say, the singer considers South Africa to be his lucky charm for the record’s success.
This time around, Maxwell is here to take audiences through his extensive and impressive discography of neo-soul, funk infused tunes, and though he has traded his signature ‘fro for an equally drool-worthy shorter shave, fans can still expect to melt at the distinctly delicious sounds of the singer’s bassy baritone and flute-like falsetto.
Since the release of his 1996 debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, the talented performer has mesmerised music lovers with his lyrics and grooves, which have earned him multiple awards, nominations and number one spots on Billboard’s album charts. Some big hits include ‘Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)’ from the first record; ‘Fortunate’, which featured on the soundtrack for the 1999 film Life and is the singer’s most successful single to date; and his breathtaking cover of Kate Bush’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ on his third album, Now (2001).
Maxwell disappeared from the limelight just after the turn of the century and took an eight-year hiatus, but returned as entertaining (and hot) as ever, earning “Best RnB Album” and “Best Male RnB Vocal Performance” Grammys in 2010 for BLACKsummers’night and the record’s lead single, ‘Pretty Wings’, respectively.
Like a fine wine, it seems that the ambassador of soul has only gotten better with age, and his live concert will likely have both seasoned and new fans drunk on every single note.
