Maboneng Township Arts Experience in Gugulethu

Gugulethu transforms its houses into galleries and its streets into stages for a one-of-a-kind grassroots showcase

Residents of Gugulethu open up their homes and public spaces in honour of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience, an annual exhibition that sees 20 houses in the neighbourhood converted into galleries and outdoor areas transformed into stages and performance districts, on Sunday, 29 November 2015.

Originally started by artist Siphiwe Ngwenya from Alexandra, Johannesburg in 2000 as a way of creating opportunities and awareness around creativity, the project expanded to Cape Town in 2012 and has since been in townships like Kayamandi in Stellenbosch, as well as Soweto, Alexandra and, more recently, Langa.

During this year’s Maboneng Township Arts Experience visitors to the vibrant Cape Town community will be guided to ‘gallery’ homes, which will be showcasing the work of local and international artists. Along the pedestrian route, tour-goers can enjoy bright, beautiful murals on the surrounding walls and even stumble upon a street performance or two. The Maboneng experience also includes live music, film screenings, and various dance and theatre productions as they are working in partnership with the Cape Town International Dance Festival.

This year, the organisers are also launching an exciting addition to the gallery homes. So-called Meditation Homes will open their doors to the public, where the homeowners have been trained in the art of meditation. These homes will also have film screenings of Albie Sachs’ Soft Vengeance, a film that explores his journey of meditation in South Africa.

One of the main aims of this annual project is to drive business and tourism through to Gugulethu, thereby offering the residents the means to express their identity and the culture of the surrounding area. Not to mention, the township arts festival was chosen as one of the top 32 projects in the world by the International Public Art Awards last year.
