Get out of the city, venture to the Mother City’s oldest township this festive season in Cape Town and do your shopping at the Langa Quarter Summer Market. Sister to the Company’s Garden-based Cape Town Summer Market, this township bazaar offers retail therapy, live entertainment and more just off the N2 national road at the old St. Louis Primary School (on the corner of Rubusana Avenue and N’Dabeni Street) from Friday, 20 to Tuesday, 24 December 2013.
With over 40 stalls to choose from, the souk presents shopaholics with a chance to scoop up some last-minute holiday season gifts, haggle with vendors selling top-notch local goods and crafts as well as enjoy live music, yummy local cuisine and much more. Not to mention, patrons can grab a brew or two at the beer garden or soak up the sun while listening to festive, sultry jazz tunes performed by local musos. What’s more, tour guides will be on hand for those who want to explore the area, and art lovers can also check out the 10 homes on Rubusana Street, within the Langa Quarter, that have been transformed into permanent galleries as part of the Maboneng Township Arts Experience.
Established in the late 1920s, Langa boasts a long and storied history and is working hard to emerge from the shadows and establish itself as one of the Mother City’s township tourist destinations. A part of the non-profit organisation’s iKhaya le Langa’s lead project, the first ever Langa Quarter Summer Market aims to encourage residents, suburbanites and tourists alike to explore this historic township as well as enjoy the vibrant culture of the area.
Tickets for the 2013 Langa Quarter Summer Market
Entry to the market is gratis, mahala and for FREE! Though, patrons will be charged a nominal fee for the tour guide services (optional).
More about iKhaya le Langa
iKhaya le Langa is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that tackles the growing issue of unemployment through community regeneration and social enterprise initiatives.
