Puccini’s beautiful opera takes on a new twist as the classic story gets a South African spin. A perfect marriage between a bohemian opera and a once thriving, bohemian district, La Boheme is used in this context as an ode to the historical legacy of District Six.
The show forms part of the popular Suidosterfees series, and will take place at the KykNET Theatre at the Artscape on Thursday, 28, and Friday, 29 April, and Sunday, 1 May. Look through Puccini’s lens at what life was like in the creative and colourful hub of one of South Africa’s most controversial and well-loved areas. With a multicultural melting pot of residents in direct opposition to the tyranny of Apartheid segregation law, District Six was tragically destroyed by forced removals during the 1970s. This performance takes us back to when the area was at its peak, in terms of bohemian artistry and cosmopolitan culture. History and heritage collide with enchanting music to pay homage to what the region once was, and hopefully, could one day become again.
