Klein Karoo Klassique in Oudtshoorn

The Little Karoo goes big with a weekend-long fiesta of classical music, food and art

Indulge in a good helping of classical music, art, food and wine at the annual Klein Karoo Klassique, which takes place in the ‘ostrich town’ of Oudtshoorn from Friday, 11 to Sunday, 13 August 2017. The ninth Klein Karoo Klassique sees a bigger music programme than ever, with eight recitals covering the whole classical music spectrum. All will be performed by renowned  local classical musicians and vocalists.

The festival includes intimate recitals by duos, as well as choral and orchestral concerts, and this year’s event boasts appearances from several celebrated national artists. Along with these, a pick of the best of South Africa’s promising young classical talent will perform together in the AKTV Concert that brings the weekend to a spectacular end.

With its beautiful Swartberg Mountains and evergreen fynbos-fragrant landscape, the wintry Karoo is the ideal location for this festival; the uncomplicated beauty of the area complements the simple pleasure that comes from listening to superb music. The Klassique is not just about the music though, it also offers a feast for the senses, including beautiful fine art for the eyes and delicious delights for the tongue. So, prepare for a wonderful weekend of culture in the colourful Klein Karoo.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2017 KLEIN KAROO KLASSIQUE

GREAT CLASSICAL MUSIC: Fans of soulful, soothing sounds are in for a treat. Recitals of classical masterpieces, such as Vivaldi on violin and Beethoven’s Tango are but two  of programme highlight. Attracting talented local virtuoso guitarists, violinists, harpists, soprano and mezzo soprano singers, accordionists, tenors, flutists, pianists, and more, the Klassique is all about magnificent melodies and the talent of the music makers. Be sure to book to watch some of the concerts on offer.

FANTASTIC FINE ART: For those looking for visual stimulation, various art exhibitions will be  showcasing the skills and talent of fine artists from the the area and surrounds. There’s even going to be an art auction on the Saturday at the Calitzdorp Railway Station! Find out which painters and exhibitions to look out for at the festival on Klassique’s website.

GOOD FOOD AND WINE: It wouldn’t be a real festival in the Western Cape without delicious food and wine and, accordingly, there are various options for those who want to tickle their taste buds with the best in international and local fare. Many of the restaurants in the region will be tempting guests with specially devised menus for the weekend, so be sure to check the programme for updates.

TICKETS FOR THE 2017 KLEIN KAROO KLASSIQUE

While there is no fee for the festival as a whole, tickets for the performances and certain food and art events are individually priced and will be available online via Computicket.com or at Computicket outlets; otherwise, you can also call +27 (0)861 915 8000.

The cost of a ticket to each show is R125. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to send an email to Info@kunste.org.za or to call the same phone number, +27 (0)861 915 8000. For full details on the shows, you can find the weekend programme on Klassique.co.za.

There’s always something to do in charming Oudtshoorn – like riding an ostrich! We don’t know that it’s quite as relaxing as listening to classical music, but it’s a lot of fun if you’re a daredevil.

You’ll have seen the Klein Karoo once you’ve been to this festival; why not take a train and hop over to the Lower Karoo next, where you can visit the gorgeous itsy-bitsy town of Matjiesfontein?
