Historians and Capetonians who love a good hypothesis and academic debate will be interested in a lecture by Emeritus Professor Vivian Bickford-Smith from the University of Cape Town. He will be giving a lecture at the Iziko South African Museum on Tuesday, 25 October 2016, titled “Inventing British Cities in South Africa”. The lecture starts at 6pm.
Attendees will get an interesting and unique perspective on South Africa’s colonial towns and cities, as Emeritus Professor Bickford-Smith outlines how the cities created in the 1800s and earlier were modelled on their British counterparts. The talk will focus particularly on Cape Town and how it was built on the same principles of architecture and with monuments related to British culture. Furthermore, the lecture will highlight the imported British institutions and traditions that gave Cape Town a sense of loyalty to Europe.
Emeritus Professor Bickford-Smith studied his PhD at Cambridge University and now specialises in modern history with a South African focus. He has conducted extensive research in three areas, namely urban history, film and history, and ethnicity and nationalism. In terms of urban history, he has authored multiple publications on the history of Cape Town. He is in the process of writing a book for Cambridge University Press on the modern cities and identities in South Africa, with a focus on Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The book looks at the way particular identities have been created, challenged and changed within each city.
