Intro to Photography Workshop

Amateur togs can get snapping like pros after learning these camera basics

Forget about your camera’s auto function, switch to manual and start creating professional photographs after learning a few handy tips during this Intro to Photography Workshop. Taking place on Saturday, 27 August 2016, at the Century City Conference Centre, the training course will give beginners the basic knowledge and confidence to start snapping those stunning scenes.

The 3-hour training session will help you understand the relationship between the Holy Trinity of photography – shutter speed, aperture and ISO, and how they need to be used together to get a perfectly lit photo. The workshop will also look at what equipment you need, and how to edit your pictures using different editing software.

DISCUSSION POINTS AT THE 2016 INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP IN CAPE TOWN

Camera types: Take a look at the endless variety of camera models available on the market, and see which camera is best suited to your needs. This topic will help you choose the perfect camera for your needs, and give you insight into the difference between the big brands.

Camera Functions: All DSLR cameras come with a range of menus and functions to choose from, which can be quite intimidating for beginners. This lesson will reveal what all the functions do, as well as show you which ones you’ll need to use, and which ones you can ignore.

Lens Types: Believe it or not, your lens is actually the most important piece of equipment in your arsenal. Different lenses can make the same scene look completely different, so learn about the difference between fixed, wide-angle, telephoto and macro lenses, as well as when it is best to use them.

Exposure: Knowing the concepts of metering and exposure is key to beautiful photographs, and ultimately getting the correct light in your image is what separates the professionals from the amateurs.

Motion and Depth: Depth of Field and motion are two elements of photography that add that extra wow factor to a good image. Knowing how and when to blur the background, or add a bit of motion to the picture will give your photos some drama and punch. If you want to capture a sharp car that’s zooming past, but have a blurred background, then being able to control motion is an important skill. Similarly, knowing how aperture affects the Depth of Field in an image can make or break your perfect shot.

Composition: This lesson explores the placement of different elements in the scene of your image. Learning how to explore different angles, look for patterns and use natural lines can enhance your picture and separate it from everyone else’s.

Manual Mode: The standard setting for all professional togs, this mode allows you to control every aspect of the photograph, from shutter speed and aperture to ISO and metering. Work like a pro and unlock the full potential of your camera by getting to grips with this incredible function.

Basic Editing: Take a look at a few editing programmes and explore the differences between each of them. This will help you make the right choice when it comes to purchasing the vital software.
