International Museum Day at the Taj Cape Town

Spend International Museum Day a little differently this year...

While we are very aware that the Taj Cape Town is not an actual museum, it’s history does suggest otherwise. On Thursday, 18 May 2017, the Mother City will once again be gripped by Museum Day fever with residents flocking to the Iziko Museums.The Twankey Bar, at the Taj Cape Town, will be contributing to the exciting evening’s festivities by featuring two delicious new cocktails.

Where the Taj Cape Town now stands, a hospital for the Dutch East India Company once stood. In 1786 the site was demolished; the land was divided and houses were built in its stead. The residential area was subsequently purchased by the Board of Executors and construction began to convert it the the Reserve Bank, with the first of the buildings being designed by James Morris. It was inspired by the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, and Morris commissioned Ivan Mitford Barberton to sculpt four marble lions which would sit at each entrance. A second building, Temple Chambers, was built in 1896 and revamped in the 1920s. A statue stands above the door of the Twankey Bar (which now lives in what was the Temple Chambers building) which has since been falsely labelled as Britannia, a memory from the Cape’s history.

In honour of the shared historical past the Taj Cape Town and the city itself, this Museum Day will see the Taj Cape Town celebrate its history with two themed cocktails for you all to enjoy. The Wales Bones was named after Wale Street, and contains sweet citrus notes with a hint of honey; it’s a robust blend of Don Julio Reposado, medium Sherry and Aperol, served on the rocks. The Spice Route is an exotic blend of spicy Bourbon and Indian flavours. It contains Bulliet Frontier Bourbon shaken with pineapple, cardamom and rose, with a sprinkle of Tonka Bean.

Entrance to the Taj Cape Town on Thursday, 18 May 2017 is free, however the cocktails obviously come with a charge. No bookings are needed, but please be aware that these cocktails are limited editions and can only be sampled at the Taj Cape Town.
