To most of the world Syria is as much of a mystery as it is a tragedy. Ravaged, war-torn, with 3,977,211 registered refugees (taken from the UNHCR on 7 May 2015) and counting, the country is in crisis and has a long history of violence, displacement and human rights abuse. Journalist, photographer & independent documentary filmmaker Yazeed Kamaldien gives people a rare glimpse behind the wall, with his exhibition and film titled Inside Kobane, on Thursday, 4 June at the District Six Homecoming Centre.
In March 2015, Kamaldien ventured into Syria’s Kobane region with the aim of documenting global terror group Islamic State’s (IS) impact on the global population. The IS group is one of many factions currently battling for ground in the devastated nation.
A short history of the conflict: After anti-government protests intensified to all-out civil war in 2012 between the opposition and Baath government, Syria became increasingly isolated from the rest of the world. Its situation has been further complicated by the rise of the radical Islamist militia and al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra front, and the IS’s jihadist militants in more recent years. The on-going struggle for religious and political power has resulted in the deaths of over 200,000 Syrian people and the displacement of millions more.
Kamaldien’s 23- minute film examines the broken remains of the city and includes interviews with local people still living in the area. This film is complemented by Kamaldien’s striking photographs, which depict Kurdish refugee camps in Turkey, whilst also showing the current Kobane landscape.
“My work often is about bringing to the public consciousness the stories of people who have suffered or are marginalised. I want to connect readers and audiences with these stories and people that they would perhaps never have encountered,” asserts Kamaldien.
The District Six Museum is a fitting stage for the exhibition with its emphasis on loss and memory. The evening will also include a discussion on the Kurdish plight by the Kurdish Human Rights Action Group.
