We’ll gif you one good reason why you need to go to the KnexT big thing in the Mother City: it involves mind-blowing static and animated pictures in a bitmap image format… otherwise known as the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). That’s right all you computer-savvy kids out there! Cape Town’s getting a super cool inreallife.gif exhibition on Thursday, 30 June 2016 at the KnexT Art Gallery.
For those not in the know, all those moving cat pictures you’ve been ogling over for years on the Internet are, in fact, GIFs, which simply refers to the image’s format, which is compressed in order to reduce transfer time. Although GIFs are only 29-years young, they’ve taken over and nary a day goes by that some new GIF meme doesn’t hit the web. This exhibition explores them in all their glorious forms, looking specifically at the blurring of lines between GIFs and reality – is life just one big GIF? It could be.
What’s really cool is that the exhibit.gif group behind the show are looking for submissions from the public – so if you’ve designed any amazing GIFs lately, feel free to submit them before Friday, 24 June. If you go to the Exhibitdotgif.com website you can view the current submissions – we particularly like ‘Carrot Man’ by Graham Samuel, ‘Unillama’ (not its actual name) by Edwin de Swardt and U.Gif by Studio Bolland. Remember the theme is ‘inreallife.gif’ and all mediums are accepted, whether you want to send a drawing, animation, 3D model, collage, code or anything else.
ENTRY TO THE 2016 INREALLIFE.GIF EXHIBITION AT KNEXT GALLERY
Entry to the gallery is free and its opening hours are from Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm. The exhibition starts at 7pm.
