Ikapa Dance Theatre Presents My Space?

This beautiful thought-provoking production will take your breath away

What does the concept of space mean? My space, your space, shared space, controlled space? Who owns space? The performers from the Ikapa Dance Theatre, a neo-classical contemporary dance company based in Cape Town, explore these questions with three breathtaking choreographed pieces. Following an international tour, the performance, called My Space?, takes over the Artscape theatre stage from Thursday, 20 June to Sunday, 23 June 2013.

The highly acclaimed production features a trio of dances, “Changing Spaces” by Celeste Botha, “Power” by Lulu Sala, and “Mine!” by company directors Theo Ndindwa and Tanya Arshamian, all of which investigate the concept of shared space through movement. The artists display the ways in which the human need for control manifests in different spatial situations, be it intimate relationships or public areas owned by society in general. Their performance also investigates the sense of power and ownership or feelings of rejection and displacement that often accompany the ideas of separate or communal space.

Each individual piece is technically demanding yet beautiful and emotionally engaging, and all of them combine and complement each other to make for a unique and dynamic production.

iKapa Dance Theatre

“Empowering people through dance” is the iKapa Dance Theatre’s motto, and since 2007 the organisation has been looking for ways to motivate and inspire South Africa’s youth. The neo-classical contemporary dance company and non-profit organisation not only nurtures talent, but also provides opportunities for employment and skills development for young people living in impoverished communities – they offer an apprenticeship program, a youth dance theatre, commercial adult classes and a training and outreach school, which operates in Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Philippi and New Crossroads.

iKapa was founded by Theo Ndindwa, a skilled national and international dancer who grew up in Gugulethu, and Tanya Arshamian, an accomplished ballet and contemporary dancer trained in the UK. Both of them recognised the lack of diversity within the South African dance industry, particularly for black artists in leading roles, and so they sought to rectify this with productions that are socially relevant, publicly engaging and most of all, inclusive.
