Stories are a big part of what makes us human. They are the fabric out of which our societies are woven and the threads from which we stitch our individual identities. Jungle Theatre’s production is an ode to the art of storytelling, which combines English and isiXhosa with music, comedy and artistic masks to create a vivid and creative experience for children. The play is on at the Masque Theatre from Monday, 29 June until Friday, 3 July 2015.
Suitable for little ones aged four-years and up, the performance tells the tale of a married couple living on the Wild Coast in ancient times that embark on a mission to find the stories that lead to magical animals under the sea. Actors Ntombifuthi Mkhasibe and Vincent Meyburgh inject the play with music and an energy that makes it enjoyable for both kids and parents. Following the play, there’s also a workshop that allows children to reflect on what they’ve seen, ask questions and explore the stage, while becoming characters in the story.
Based on a traditional Zulu folktale, the performance is rich in culture and history and promises to be a fun and educational morning for kiddies. Children will also get an illustrated book version of How Stories Began to take home with them, so they can share the stories with their families and continue the learning process.
Money raised from the show will go towards funding the production’s tour to Nalíbali reading clubs to inspire kids to read African stories in their mother tongue, fostering literacy and a celebration of heritage.
