How Awesome Would It Be If this Cape Town-inspired Frozen Yoghurt Range Was Real?

We’ve reimagined some of the Mother City’s hotspots as cool and quirky FroYo creations

With the Mother City firmly at the top of our ‘Biggest Loves’ chart, it’s really just a race for second place.   One of the top contenders for that silver medal position is a creation that has become synonymous with good times, happy memories and shareable moments: Marcel’s Frozen Yoghurt

The proudly South African brand, which was established in Stellenbosch in 1989 by Marcel van der Merwe, was the first of its kind in the country, so, in terms of the local FroYo industry, Marcel’s is the gold medal of the biz.  Over the course of the past 25 years, the popular chilled dessert has garnered a loyal following thanks to its irresistible flavours, like English Toffee, Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry to name a few.

And in honour of this FroYo guru’s quarter-century milestone, we’ve decided to bring together the two objects of our affection in a cool and quirky way by reimagining some of Cape Town’s most popular places to visit as new Marcel’s Frozen Yoghurt flavours.

The Signal Hill of Deliciousness
Cape Town’s other famous flat-topped attraction inspires sedimentary layers of fresh apple and creamy caramel FroYo dusted with a fynbos of mint. And to, er, top it all off?  Perhaps a sculptural, star-like spun sugar creation (let’s hope it’s not too controversial!). Expect a Noon Gun burst of flavour!

The Company’s Garden of Earthly Delights
This city centre wonderland boasts the oldest cultivated pear tree in the country and a rose garden that dates back to 1929, so, obviously, we’re thinking a fragrant rose and tangy pear pairing.  But we can’t just stop there; the tasty combination will be punctuated with leafy shavings of dark chocolate and Macadamia nuts.  Be sure to keep an eye out for the surprise white Lindt ball - our interpretation of the famous albino squirrel that dwells in amongst the flora.

The Mzoli’s Shisa Yumm-o
The Mother City’s favourite braai spot is well-known for its blazing flames and diverse clientele.  In honour, we think a roasted raspberry and mango swirl topped with smoky liquorice bits and ginger beer gumdrops will do the trick.  Alternatively, the fruity combo can be enjoyed with bits of chilli-infused chocolate.

The V&A Waffel-front
This tourist hotspot gets a cool interpretation in the form of a Neapolitan take on frozen yoghurt. We’re thinking an eclectic mix of American apple pie, French vanilla and Indian cinnamon topped with mini Dutch stroopwafels.  Not to mention, the 175-mL anytime tub, a nod to Marcel’s takeaway range, won’t take up too much space in your moonbag.

The Two Oceans Aquari-yum
To capture the essence of this aquatic gem, we think an Aquari-yum creation should start with a sublime base. We’re suggesting something like a crushed blue and pink macaroon base to kick things off on a bit of a coral note. This heavenly foundation should be topped with some ultra-smooth blueberry FroYo with specks of sea salt and chunks of toasted, sweetened nori (seaweed).

The Boulders of Biscuits Beach
Starting with generous chunks of Oreo cookies, this Cape Town frozen yoghurt flavour is taken to the next level with a dark cherry and white chocolate swirl.  And to finish? Well, after already covering the penguins and rocks that make the beach so famous, we think bits of blue marshmallow will complete the Boulders Beach-in-a-tub experience.

The Sea Point Promedilla
For this oceanside Mother City attraction, we drew inspiration from the stunning sunsets one can witness from the Promenade. So, we think something like a blushing pink raspberry swirled with a tart granadilla and strokes of cherry topped with wisps of coconut cotton candy will work rather marvellously.  Alternative toppings:  chocolate-covered matzo and/or a skyline of Cadbury Flakes.

The Wine(Gum) Lands
What better way to capture all that the Cape Winelands have to offers in a single FroYo creation than by suggesting something along the lines of a dark chocolate, Pinotage-infused frozen yoghurt accented with delicious Champagne-flavoured wine gums.  Naturally, we also think a Rosé and nougat pairing would go down smashingly.

The Clifton Beach Blizzard

This heavenly patch in the land of the bold, beautiful and bank loans is one of the best spots to enjoy sand, surf and salty air, so we’re thinking a creation comprising a caramel and white chocolate swirl with a sprinkle of sea salt (or bits of pretzel) and a mound of granadilla lolly gumdrops on top.

The Newlands Forest of Flavours
This local gem, which spreads stunningly along the eastern slopes of Table Mountain  and is a family-friendly spot, makes us think of refreshing and adventurous tastes. More specifically, we think Marcel’s should consider a fynbos and forest berry marriage, speckled with hints of mint and topped with Jelly Babies.
