Dancing onto the Masque Theatre’s stage from Wednesday, 9 December, until Sunday, 20 December 2015, this vibrant new musical tells the tale of Jonathan, as he reflects on his life in Hope Street. A bildungsroman of sorts, Jonathan takes us from his childhood through to old age through memories he shares with a pair of vagrants.
Now an elderly man who feels isolated and lonely, Jonathan relays the rich story of his life to two homeless figures named Blikkies and Bergie. The musical re-enacts various sketches of his memories, with dialogue interwoven with musical hits. From Jonathan’s youth and first love, to his wedding day and old age, we tread softly through the maze of his mind and begin to understand why his story has unfolded in the way it has.
The performance borrows multiple memorable hits that audiences are certain to recognise, including ‘Memory’, ‘When You’re Good to Mama’, ‘We Found Love’, ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and other sing-along inducing sounds. As much a musical genre journey as the occupancy of a man’s mind, the Hope Street Musical is sweet, soulful and nostalgic, and a good way to while away a summer evening.
