High Tease Presents The Star Spankled Burlesque Show

Enjoy a bit of glamorous old-school teasing and titillation with this irreverent comedic commentary on the Golden Age of burlesque.

Bawdy, brazen and beautiful, High Tease Burlesque Production’s latest performance is a comedic commentary on American burlesque culture and cabaret in the 1950s. The Star Spankled Burlesque Show delves into the mystical and fantastical realm of theatrical striptease and will light up Muizenberg’s Masque Theatre from Thursday, 2 July until Saturday, 4 July 2015.

Bringing together all the best and most dramatic elements of striptease, costuming, theatre, dance and vaudevillian humour, burlesque is viewed as an art form celebrating sexuality and challenging the traditional conception of beauty. Born from the minstrel culture in America, the modern style of burlesque that we’re familiar with arrived in the 1900s with female artists mixing dance, drama and music on stage. The movement took a knock with the Prohibition era, but recovered in the 1950s, also known as the golden era of burlesque.

The Star Spankled Burlesque Show aims to unpack the meaning behind classical burlesque in an irreverent manner. Tongue firmly in-cheek at all times, it looks set to keep audiences riveted. With a Fourth of July American Independence Day theme combined with a uniquely South African sense of humour, the spectacle promises plenty of laughs with a naughty streak. Suitable for anyone aged 18 to 118 with ‘champagne tastes’, fans are in for a tassel-filled treat.

High Tease is an artistic collaboration between Sophia Von Syren and Mademoiselle Demi Monde, Cape Town based professional burlesque performers. Their aim is to expand the South African audience reach of their beloved art form and to encourage an understanding of the nature of vintage showmanship.
