Hermanus FynArts Festival

Celebrate all things artsy with ten mind-blowing days jam-packed with exhibitions, workshops and performances

The quaint coastal town of Hermanus, better known as the whale watching capital of the country, is quickly establishing itself on South Africa’s arts and culture map with the annual Hermanus FynArts festival. The fifth one of its kind, this fair of visual arts, literature, music and award-winning food and wine takes place from Friday, 9 June 2017 to Sunday, 18 June 2017.

Visitors will definitely find something up their alley at this fest, whether they’re interested in an art amble with gallery owners and artists, an illustrated talk discussing the French legacy in South Africa or a cooking course on how to prepare tapas. The kids will have plenty to keep them busy too, with fun arts and crafts activities such as Cookies and Crafts for Kids, and the whole family can enjoy screenings of films.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2017 HERMANUS FYNARTS FESTIVAL

CREATIVE SPACES: Hosted in a number of different venues, this creative extravaganza will transform the little dorp into a stimulating hub of exhibitions (featuring painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography), classic and contemporary music and tasty, award-winning vinos and eats.

WORKSHOPS GALORE: Crafty and creative festival-goers can sign up for some interesting workshops, ranging from macro photography and woodwork, to painting with watercolour and creating ceramics. Each workshop has different price ranges and event times, so be sure to visit the official website to secure your spot.

DELISH BEVERAGES AND CUISINE: Of course, one needs to enjoy some yummy goods while taking in all that culture! The festival does not disappoint with fine wine tastings (featuring top notch reds, whites and bubblies), indulgent winter pudding cooking demonstrations and decadent chocolate making classes, to name a few.

ART, ART AND MORE ART: Enjoy the work of more than 200 painters, ceramicists and sculptors, which will be exhibited in the town’s galleries, hotels, Anglican Church and along the scenic seafront. Expect to see works from Zapiro, the Keiskamma Art Project, Janko de Beer, Errol Norbury and loads more. Look out for the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Tondo Competition exhibition in the cellar of the Bouchard Finlayson wine estate.

REEL TIME: This year, the festival aims to show a variety of popular flicks guaranteed to keep any avid film fan happy. The selection varies from musicals such as the 2002 Chicago staring Catherine Zeta-Jones , to classic feature films like 1952’s Singing in the Rain and 1961 flick West Side Story. So bring your popcorn and settle down for some cinematic fun!

KIDS ACTIVITIES: Parents, fear not! Your little ones will be well taken care of with a range of fun-filled activities and events on the festival’s agenda. Take the kids to an interactive puppet show or let them try their hand at baking biscuits. Either way, there’s plenty to keep your tykes busy and content!
