Witty, dark, humorous and unique; this season sees a selection of Broadway maestro Christopher Durang’s plays take over our pretty city under the direction of Cape Town filmmaker and theatre talent Katey Carson. Funerals, Kidnappings, Swizzle Sticks and Other Distractions consists of six laugh-a-minute short plays showing at the Galloway Theatre, Port Road, Cape Town - from Thursday, 5 November until Sunday, 6 December.
Produced by Michael Murphey and Heike Brunner, the show’s selection falls within the genre of dark comedy, with plenty of fantastically funny moments that do justice to Durang’s “catastrophically comedic texts”. Normal snapshots from daily life take on a twist and somehow traffic departments, funerals, photosynthesis and divorcees at dinner become unexpectedly hilarious.
The selected plays include: For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls, Funeral Parlour, The Book of Leviticus Show, Mrs. Sorken, DMV Tyrant, Canker Sores and Other Distractions. All of these are brought to life by a talented cast that comprises Adrienne Pearce, Dylan Esbach, Danieyella Rodin, Mark Penwill, Roxanne Gabriels, Caroline Midgley, Joe Vaz, Kate McDonald, Alistair Moulton-Black, Mark Sykes and Heike Brunner.
