Opera gets a proudly South African twist when the wildly popular Four:30 Operas Concert returns to the Mother City. Four renowned local composers create home-grown contemporary shows that reflect our diverse heritage and it all gets underway from Saturday, 21 to Saturday, 28 November 2015.
No stranger to the local performing arts scene, the Four:30 Operas is a creative collaboration with the University of Cape Town’s Opera School and our very own Cape Town Opera. The concept was originally launched in 2010 as Five:20 Operas and continues to blow audiences away. The premise of the this year’s event is revealing four brand- newoperas, all created by local composers.
“We must constantly create new operas” says conductor Kamal Khan, while adding that, “There are so many exciting new singers being discovered in South Africa” .
This time around, audiences can look forward to seeing The Application, Blood of Mine, Bessie: The Blue-Eyed Xhosa and Anti-Lauis. The subject matter of the performances varies from a re-imagining of King Oedipus to the story of an English girl found on the West Coast and who was accepted and raised into Xhosa culture amongst others.
