Forage Harvest Feast

Kiddies can channel their inner hunter-gatherer at this unique Cape Peninsula walkabout

Allow your little ones to explore the Peninsula’s abundant fields at this month’s Forage Harvest Feast Fynbos Foraging Course. This ongoing series gives Capetonians the chance to dust off their walking shoes and explore the Cape Point gardens while learning about indigenous edibles in the process. The next interactive class, which is aimed at children, is scheduled for Saturday, 4 October 2014.

The half-day sessions, which take place in and around the Good Hope Gardens Nursery on a monthly basis, are led by two knowledgeable members of the nursery team: Roushanna Gray,  a passionate foodie and fynbos enthusiast who lives on the premises and runs the tea garden, and Gael Gray, who is the co-founder and owner of the nursery and has conducted ground-breaking research into under-utilised indigenous species in the horticultural trade.

The pair take visitors on a walk through the nursery’s organic vegetable gardens and the surrounding bush. Walkers have the chance to discover and pick edible foods and fresh vegetables, learn more about the plants and make some yummy treats with their findings.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE FORAGE HARVEST FEAST

FORAGING FUN: After equipping kiddies with a basket, scissors and other necessary tools, Gael and Roushanna lead the little ones and their parents on a foraging excursion through the nursery gardens and surrounding bush. Walkers are guided to look out for a range of indigenous edible fruits and veg, and can expect to find berries, herbs, tubers and more.

FINE, FRESH FARE: After a stint of morning scavenging, little ones will have the opportunity to test their mettle in the kitchen. Kiddies will get the chance to take their forage finds and bake scones, which will then be served with iced tea.

A FEAST OF INFORMATION: Not to mention, Gael and Roushanna will regale guests with fascinating titbits and interesting asides regarding harvesting. Foragers will learn about what kinds of veggies, fruits and leafy greens to look out for, which are poisonous and should be avoided and how these can be utilised in the kitchen. The pair also offer insight into the medicinal properties of indigenous species and advice regarding which plants are easy to cultivate at home (and the conditions required for growth).

TICKETS FOR THE FORAGE HARVEST FEAST

Tickets for the event can be booked by contacting Roushanna on +27 (0) 72 234 4804 or via email on roushanna@hotmail.com. Tickets cost R150per child. Though, there is a special discount for more bookings of more than one kid of R120p/p. Price includes a scone-making session served with beverages. The event can accommodate a maximum of about 16 people (and only runs if there are a minimum of 8 bookings).

Parents are allowed to tag along for free, but will not be able to participate in the day’s activities. Please note that little ones younger than four years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
