The FNB Varsity Cup has become tradition, and nowhere is the atmosphere more festive than at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch or at the UCT Rugby Fields. The boys from each university will get to wage their battles on home soil amidst the passionate cheers of their supporters throughout the popular tournament.
The 2015 FNB Varsity Cup tournament, which runs until 13 April 2015, when the final will take place, features eight of the strongest university rugby teams in the country competing for top honours.
But it’s not just quality rugby that makes the event exciting: it’s the infectious spirit. Supporters dressed up to the nines in varsity colours and outrageous getups, singing songs and getting festive are all part of the experience.
In the spirit of putting rugby towards a good cause, each team in the FNB Varsity Cup this year is advocating the “Keep the aggro on the field” campaign. Each first team player in the Cup has committed to physically lending a hand at the shelter/organisation of their university’s choice. Appropriated funds from the FNB Varsity Cup will be used towards these social upliftment projects. Maties supports La Brie de Dieu, a safe house for women and children in Stellenbosch, and UCT is supporting Sisters Incorporated in Cape Town.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2015 FNB VARSITY CUP
EXCITING RUGBY: Amendments to this year’s FNB Varsity Cup rules include the “White Card”, whereby captains or coaches can challenge a referee’s decision. Each team is allocated one White card per half, which gets used up if the challenge is deemed unsuccessful. The Free Catch Rule from 2014 still applies this year, and if a player catches the ball following an opposing kick before it touches the ground, the referee will call a free kick advantage, which aims to minimise kicking and get players to run the ball all the way to the triline for more exciting rugby!
DARE TO DIVE: As with all home games, three students from each res will participate in the Dare To Dive competition. These fans will perform live stage dives for the crowd, hoping to to be the diver who scores the loudest cheers, therefore qualifying for the Facebook competition in which fans will vote for the best diver. The winner will perform a solo dive at the opening of the final match, as well as win some great prizes.
