FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN

What do you run on? Find out at this year’s spectacular ONERUN race.

One of the Cape’s favourite races returns to the Mother City on Sunday, 15 May 2016. Traversing some of our city’s most scenic spots, the popular 12-km route takes runners through various key historic areas including wild wetlands, the humming harbour, and passed the courtly cathedral. Don your running shoes and hit the highway in the hopes of winning serious cash (we’re talking about a total prize purse of R300 000 in cash!) and plenty of prestige.

After a successful inaugural race last year, the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN sprints in for another innings with entries currently open and closing at midnight on Sunday, 1 May 2016. With an unrivalled ambience, action-packed itinerary and feeling of inclusive camaraderie, the event promises to be one you don’t want to miss, whatever you may run on. Enter online via  www.thecapetown12.com

What do you run on? Each person’s reason to run is intensely personal – whether it’s a need for adrenaline, beauty, fitness, freedom or something else. FNB want to know your reason to run – share it via the FNB ONERUN Facebook page, Twitter or instagram and join the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN community.

With a formula that celebrates our city – its people and its culture – the race includes all the ingredients necessary for a winning event, such as live music, a cheering crowd and no cut-off time. That’s right folks and slow pokes – you can take your time and enjoy magnificent views of the mountain en-route.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE 2016 FNB CAPE TOWN 12 ONERUN

WHERE & WHEN DOES THE RACE START AND FINISH?

The race begins in Milnerton at Woodbridge Island, which is along Marine Drive (R27), with the GPS co-ordinates -33.88648883583, 18.49063639021. It finishes at the FNB Portside Building, which is at 4 Bree Street in the city centre. The race begins at 9am sharp so don’t be late!

HOW CAN I ENTER AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

There are two entry packages available – the Standard Entry costs R120p/p and includes the race entry, timing chip and a bus ride to the start, and the Gold Package costs R650p/p and includes the race entry, timing chip, shuttle service to the start and exclusive access to the Gold entrants’ area, which has refreshments and a massage available for runners. Enter via www.thecapetown12.com  – you will need to set up a profile to do so.

HOW DO THE START CHUTE AND SEEDING WORK?

Seeding pens are arranged from A to H and your seeding will be on your race number. If you went for the Gold Package, you get access to the exclusive seeding pen. The pens feed in from the back, so you’ll move forward to your section. Remember, there’ll be a lucky draw at the start line but you must be present to claim your prize. Bring some cash to buy treats from the vendors dotted around the start of the race – you might need an energy boost.

The 1st start chute is for elite runners (by invitation only), the 2nd chute is for seeded runners (sub 33:00 for 10km), the 3rd start chute is for seeded runners (sub 45:00 for 10km), the rest of the chutes are self-seeding (based on a first come, first served basis), and there’s a walker’s chute for walkers and a wheelchair chute for wheelchair athletes.

IS THE ROUTE SAFE AND WILL THERE BE ENTERTAINMENT ALONG THE WAY?

Yes, it’s completely safe! There is full road closure along the route so it’s reserved for runners only. There’ll also be 24 entertainment checkpoints spread out across the 12-km with water points at 3-km, 6-km, 8-km and 10-km. Each point has its own sponsor so expect a different ‘vibe’ every time. There’s only water available at the 3-km point, but the others will all have the option of Coke as well. KFM will be broadcasting live from the finish and Bree Street will be buzzing with music and activity. Remember to check the Mobii timing screens at the finish to see your results, and post your times and race pictures to social media throughout the day.

WHAT PRIZES COULD I WIN?

This year, you could win a brand new Opel Adam via the start line lucky draw! There are also two tickets to Istanbul at stake for runners who dress to impress wearing garbs resembling one of the areas the airline flies to. Expect plenty of surprise giveaways on the day and keep checking the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN social media feeds for updates. The collective prize money purse for 2016 has a total of R300 000 in cash. WHERE & WHEN DO I COLLECT MY RACE PACK? CAN I MAKE A SUBSTITUTION?

You can collect your race pack on Friday, 13, and Saturday, 14 May 2016 from the Green Point Athletic Stadium. Your race pack includes your race number, timing chip and other items you ordered, such as a T-Shirt. Collection times are from 12pm to 7pm on the 13th and from 9am until 2pm on the 14th. There’ll be a chill zone, live bands, food and drinks, and great music courtesy of KFM at the collection area so come prepared to stay for a while. Some of the elite athletes will be doing interviews at 3:30pm on Friday and at 11am on Saturday, so stick around to hear their words of wisdom.

You need to bring: Your ID and race confirmation SMS. If you’re collecting on someone else’s behalf you need the same confirmation SMS, a copy of their ID and a letter of authorisation.

You need to collect: Two race numbers, a CT12 race magazine, a tog bag sticker and safety pins. Check that the two race numbers are there! Remember, you can also buy a T-shirt on registration day if you didn’t order one. Your timing chip is part of the race number and will be displayed on the front of your shift on race day so don’t bend or tamper with the chip.

If you want to make a substitution, you can do it at the Race Pack Collection Point. You need a letter of permission from the runner giving up the entry and a copy of their ID. You’ll also need to pay a R20 admin fee for the change.

HOW DOES THE BUS SERVICE WORK?

Your race numbers on the front and back of your shirt act as your ticket to ride the bus from Cape Town to the start of the race or from the finish to your car after the run. If you drive to the start, you can catch an Uber back to your car using the Cape Town 12 special or take a MyCiTi shuttle for free. Buses to the start run from the Grand Parade from 5:30am until 8am. Buses from the finish run from 11am until 2pm. Do not miss the bus! There will be secure parking at Grand Parade and in the surrounding areas like the Artscape Theatre and Civic Centre. Toilet facilities at Grand Parade are limited so limit your sports drink intake. Chat to any of the friendly Cape Town 12 helpers dotted around on the day if you need help, and remember there’s no number collection on race day.

ARE THERE ANY TRAINING GROUPS I CAN JOIN BEFORE THE RACE?

Join the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN Friday 5km training groups to get in peak physical condition to tackle 12 kilometres.  Friday is fun day, and now, also run day, so meet at the Hard Pressed Café at Portside in Bree Sreet at 6:30am to get in on the action. Run through the city, passed the V&A, Stadium and Fan Walk, and then celebrate finishing 5km with hard-earned coffee, photos and some socialising with other fitness fans. It’s free to join the group, but there are some terms and conditions to keep everyone safe and sound so check these out before you take part.  Get active on social media by using the hash tag #ct12fri5 and #ct12run, and tag @CTown12 on Twitter and @CAPETOWN_12 on Instagram. Remember to wear your Cape Town 12 T-Shirt, reflective gear and bring a headlight.

I’M A SPECTATOR – WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO WATCH THE RUN FROM?

If you’re not raring to run but you still want to get in on the action and support your loved ones, here’s a list of recommended spots to spectate from:

  • The Westin Hotel and CTICC

  • Fountain Circle in Adderley Street

  • Media 24 Building

  • Lower Long Street - near SARS building (close to the finish in Bree Street so they can move between the two)

  • Tiger's Milk in Long Street

  • Wale Street

  • La Parada in Bree Street

  • The Finish Line near Portside

DOES SOME OF THE MONEY GO TO CHARITY?

You bet it does! FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN is committed to giving back to communities and its chosen charities this year are the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and Die Burger Kersfonds. Runners can choose to support one or both of the charities the event endorses – the SPCA is all about combatting animal cruelty and is the oldest animal welfare movement in South Africa, while Die Burger Kersfonds is a Christmas fund that provides less fortunate children with an educational trip to Die Burger’s beach house in Cape Town over the festive season.

A REMINDER ABOUT WHERE TO ENTER, RACE COLLECTION & BUSES:
