Flora Old and New Exhibition

Gorgeous paintings of flora await you at this exhibition dedicated to Irma Stern

This floral exhibition by new and old artists will take your breath away and teach you a thing or two about nature in the Western Cape. Visit the Irma Stern Museum from Saturday, 3 September to Saturday, 1 October 2016 and view the Flora Old and New exhibition to celebrate the late artist’s life.

The unique plants found in the Western Cape have been a subject of interest for artists and travellers for centuries. These striking flowers have been immortalised in paint and will be on display at Flora Old and New, an exhibition curated by Mary van Blommestein that will commemorate the life of Irma Stern on the 50th anniversary of her death. The theme for this exhibition is ‘plants indigenous to southern Africa’ and it will display art by local and international artists depicting flora they have seen in the country over the years.

Flora Old and New will feature art that most people have never seen before. The UCT Manuscripts Department and Bolus Herbarium Collections will share paintings by renowned botanical artists such as Arabella Roupell, Mary Page, Beatrice Carter and Harry Bolus in addition to other work that was collected in South Africa between 1811 and 1815. The exhibition doesn’t only feature art from the 19th century – the Botanical Artists’ Association of Southern Africa has also provided work by contemporary artists from their Western Cape branch. These will be presented in various mediums such as watercolour paintings and stained glass. Collectors will be happy to know that some of the artwork will be on sale.

Those who are interested in learning more about botany and art are welcome to take part in the daily walkabouts with participating artists and attend the workshops and talks taking place at the museum.

ENTRY TO THE 2016 FLORA OLD AND NEW EXHIBITION AT THE IRMA STERN MUSEUM

Entrance to the UCT Irma Stern Museum is free of charge. The museum is open on Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm. Walkabouts take place at 11am daily.
