Looking for a little magic in your life, or on the hunt for a charming activity for kids in Cape Town? We’ve got just the event! Prepare to be spellbound at the 2012 Western Cape Junior Magician Championship competitions on Sunday, 30 September 2012 at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch.
Hosted by the esteemed College of Magic, the contest pits talented teen magicians-in-training against each other in two different categories: ‘Close-up’ and ‘Stage’. In the ‘Close-up’ competition, magicians skilled in the art of performing magic tricks will have to keep audiences spellbound up close and personal using either card or coin tricks, much like David Blaine and street magicians. The ‘Stage’ competition features magicians who are proficient in executing dramatic, large-scale illusions with props and sometimes an assistant or two, think Harry Houdini or David Copperfield.
The ‘Close-up’ competition will take place at 2pm at the intimate Baxter’s Golden Arrow Studio, and the ‘Stage’ competition will take place in the Main Theatre at 4pm.
During the interval between shows, audiences will get a chance to judge these young magicians in the Street Magic Contest, a competition in which contestants showcase their skills in a walkabout manner; members of the public will decide on who walks away with the coveted Street Magic Contest trophy.
About the College of Magic
Brainchild of director David Gore, the College of Magic opened its doors in the 80s offering performance arts training to the youth from all walks of life. With only 34 aspiring entertainers initially, the institution has blossomed into the only magical arts training organisation of its kind in the world, now hosting more than 150 students and providing a meeting ground for children who are interested in the art of magic.
Tickets for the 2012 Junior Magician Championship
Tickets to this magical afternoon are available through Computicket.com and cost R100 per person per show; students and pensioners pay a discounted rate of R80 per person per show.
