Falke Presents A Wine Adventure Trail Run through the Vineyards

Run for your wine in the luscious setting of Warwick Wine Estate

Sunday, 9 July 2017 will see a flurry of runners legging it on the hills and paths of Warwick Wine Estate in the Simonsberg Conservancy. Falke, with Dirtopia, has organised an off-road running day that blends the strenuous activity with wine drinking. You might say it’s a wine and run pairing. As unusual as this may sound, we’re sure there is no better motivator for exercise than top-quality wine!

Of course, you can’t actually run whilst sipping wine (well, you probably can, but we wouldn’t recommend it) - vino is simply going to be a reward for your active efforts. An entire set up with bottles from Warwick will be awaiting you at the refreshment station once you have completed your route - yep, your run ends with a wine tasting. Along with this, you will also be able to find a usual assortment of thirst-quenching (cold and alcohol-free) beverages, Powerade, and fruits and nuts to reinvigorate you.

There are three different course distances to choose from: the 15-km, 10-km and 5-km. None of these are an easy feat; they all feature sharp uphills, winding tracks, single trails and darting between the vines. Each will take you on a picturesque route along the slopes of Klapmutskop, a little hill in the Simonsberg Conservancy before you turn onto singletrack sections, and the road track that cuts through the vineyards of Warwick.

Warwick Wine Estate is lucky enough to be a member of the gorgeous country Simonsberg Conservancy in which it resides, meaning it can make use of its trails. Warwick is one of the oldest family-owned and run wineries and lies on an award winning farm that boasts flavourful grapes, which make for unique-tasting wine. This is the place to go for a sumptuous picnic-style lunch, as they also produce artisanal delicacies such as local cheeses and cured meats. You can pay them a visit for wine tasting and a midday meal whenever the mood takes you: they are open 365 days a year.

Dirtopia, the outdoorsy organisers of this and other trail running events, are a mountain biking events and trail construction company. They reguarly create insane action-packed routes with great views around the Western Cape, so keep looking out for other things they have in store after this event.

LOGISTICS OF THE FALKE TRAIL RUN AT WARWICK WINE ESTATE

Registration for the Falke Trail Run will begin at 7:45am at Warwick Wine Estate on Sunday, 9 July 2017. The 15-km runners will set off the earliest at 9am, those doing the 10-km will get going at 9:15am, and the 5-km runners will start at 9:30am. All races will take you through the aforementioned routes. You’ll be treated to scenic glimpses of some of the mountains of the Cape as you take in the fresh air of the Simonsberg Conservancy.

It is important to know that every runner who wants to be timed needs to have an Amarider Trail Tag - these handy little tags keep your time to give you an exact number. If you do not run with one, then you will not get a time from the organisers. No worries if you don’t have one (or have never heard of them before) - you can rent them on the day at Warwick for just R20, or buy one for R100. All trail running events organised by Dirtopia, along with those organised by other groups, require you to have a trail tag for timing, so if you’re planning on doing more it’s worth buying one to use at all your events!

AFTER THE RUN

If you manage to finish, or, heck - if you manage to start- give yourself a pat on the back. All participants who cross the finish line will receive a medal. Along with heading to the refreshment station and indulging in wine and Powerade to your heart’s delight, you can amble along Warwick’s stunning lawns and stretch out on the cool grass. The Wine Estate will also have coffee, breakfast rolls and croissants on offer to make sure you’re filled up!

ENTRIES FOR THE 2017 ADVENTURE TRAIL RUN AT WARWICK WINE ESTATE

Pre-entries are open until Wednesday, 5 July 2017, so you still have plenty of time! The price of these passes are R95 for the 5-km, R120 for the 10-km and R145 for the 15-km.

If you miss out on the pre-entries, late-entry passes can be obtained at the cost of R145p/p for the 5-km, R170p/p for the 10-km, and R195p/p for the 15-km.
