Dance music heavyweight Carl Cox is billed to usher in 2014 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) as part of the Electric New Year’s Eve Ball thanks to the good people who brought music icons Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia and Deadmau5 to town.
Supporting acts have yet to be announced, but it’s guaranteed that the CTICC will transform into a veritable playground where revellers can expect a world-class wonderland production.
Often billed as the world’s most influential DJ and celebrated for his triple deck wizardry, Carl Cox is a pioneer of the electronic dance music genre who was, and continues to be, a major crowd pleaser on the club dance floors.
Destined for greatness from a young age, Cox received his first set of turntables at 15 and became a professional DJ before he hit his 20s. Despite the fact that disco was his first love during those earlier years, the Barbados-born muso soon started dropping the same tracks as his fellow, young London beatmakers: rare groove, New York hip-hop and electro.
It wasn’t long, though, before he discovered the thrill of acid house and moved onto the rave scene with gusto. It was during those early days that Cox became known as the triple-deck master. The name came from the Sunrise rave in 1988, where Cox hooked up a third turntable and managed to lure 15, 000 kids back to the dance floor to see the sun rise at his early morning set.
From there, the rave royalty produced the chart-topping single 'I Want You’ as well as the 1995 mix CD “F.A.C.T”, which became a benchmark for techno and sold more than 250,000 copies. His subsequent offerings, the 1996 EP “Two Paintings and a Drum” and the single ‘Sensual Sophis-ti-cat’, gained critical acclaim and topped the British Top 30 charts, and his third album, “The Second Sign” (2005), reached the third spot in Spain’s national charts.
Fast forward to present day, the 50-something icon heads up two record labels, Intec Records (now Intec Digital) and 23rd Century Records, and is still regarded as a leader in the dance music industry. Not to mention, each year Cox hosts his very own stage (Carl Cox and Friends) at premier annual music festivals Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, and Electric Daisy Carnival.
Though not his first visit to Mzansi shores – he had a brief stopover in Johannesburg in 1998 – this much-anticipated performance is long overdue, and throngs of 90s club and Vibe matinee regulars are bound to descend on the CTICC for an all-out jol!
