Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show

Experience the joie de vivre evoked by the West Coast’s springtime flora!

To welcome the season of regrowth and renewal, Clanwilliam invites locals and tourists alike to marvel at the region’s unique flora at its 2016 wild flower show. Hosted at the historic Blomkerk (flower church) from Friday, 26 August to Saturday, 3 September 2016, this annual showcase will not only display the area’s magnificent plant life, but will also act as a jumping off point for visitors looking to acquaint themselves with the dorp’s fantastic activities, like rock-art viewing and market-going.

Nestled between the Olifants River and the Cederberg Mountains about 200-km from Cape Town, Clanwilliam boasts a storied past and is one of the 10 oldest towns in South Africa. Not to mention, the area also lays claim to a tremendous array of flora because of the widely variable topography, and since as early as the 1940s, the townspeople have organised flower shows on a somewhat irregular basis.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 CLANWILLIAM WILD FLOWER SHOW

FLOWERS, FLOWERS AND MORE FLOWERS: Set against the backdrop of the gothic architecture of the former Clanwilliam Dutch Reformed Church, the flower show features about 400 species from more than 30 families of plants found in the world-renowned Fynbos Biome, some of which are completely unique to the area, like the snow protea, the Clanwilliam cedar tree and rooibos. The flowers are expertly arranged and conveniently displayed in one location to give visitors the best view of nature’s season of rebirth.

LOADS OF ACTIVITIES: Apart from all the beautiful blooms, the Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show has a lot in store for the nine-day spring celebration. Since the Cederberg area is  widely regarded as the rooibos capital of the world, the Rooibos Teahouse at NetMar is a must-do; there are more than 100 flavoured and blended teas on offer. Alternatively, visitors can also look forward to group tours and the annual market where homemade and upcycled goods, local produce, foodie items and crafts will be on sale.

ANCIENT ROCK ART: According to historians, /Xam and Khoi hunter-gatherers and herders have lived in the Cederberg region for more than 500, 000 years; though, their art on cave walls and dwellings only dates back to 5000 years ago. This ancient form of artwork was a means to document life events and used for religious purposes. The rock art in the Clanwilliam region is protected by the Heritage Resources Act, and interested parties can see these ancient paintings at the Living Landscape Project in Clanwilliam or on the Sevilla Trail on the R364 east of the town.

THE LIVING LANDSCAPE PROJECT: Visiting this community-based initiative at the old school hall is like taking a time machine to pre-colonial times, a period when the /Xam people lived as hunter-gatherers in the Clanwilliam area. Today the fossils, artefacts and ruined structures tell the story of the ancient peoples’ lives, and the garden around the building houses plants that the /Xam used for food, medicine and as markers of time. Visit the project, which is on Park Street in Clanwilliam. For more information contact +27 (0) 27 482 2024.
