Circles of Support Charity Variety Show at the Baxter Theatre

Comedians Nik Rabinowitz and Anne Hirsch headline a night at the theatre in support of the Perinatal Mental Health Project

What do a comedian, an opera singer and a dance troupe have in common? For a start they (and others) will grace the Baxter Theatre stage for the scintillating Circles of Support variety concert on Saturday, 16 August 2014.

A Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) initiative in support of depression and anxiety-ridden pregnant and post-natal women and girls from disadvantaged communities, this multifaceted performance will feature some of Mzansi hottest theatre, dance and musical acts to raise much-needed funds for the Hanover Service Project – one of the PMHP’s offshoot ventures.

The fun-meets-philanthropy affair promises some seriously good fun, with a line-up that includes funnymen and women, like Nik Rabinowitz and Anne Hirsch, as well as renowned songstress Aviva Pelham, afro-jazz group Coda and many more.

LINE-UP FOR CIRCLES OF SUPPORT CHARITY VARIETY SHOW AT THE BAXTER THEATRE

Nik Rabinowitz:

Comedian, author and master mimic Nik Rabinowitz is as loved as he is laughed at. A Xhosa-speaking Jewish guy from the Mother City, Rabinowitz interrogates world issues, rips politicians to shreds and has the uncanny ability to impersonate any celebrity or accent. Whether he is mimicking Juju Malema, a Sandton kugal or a husky-voiced Helen Zille, he’s sure to have you in stitches.

Anne Hirsch (emcee):

This Bloemfontein-born comedienne promises to a bucketload of laughs. For those not in the know, she’s known for her hilarious YouTube channel, The Anne Hirsch Show, where she invites local bigwigs to share a seat with her on her red couch. Anne received her big break after winning season two of SABC’s So You Think You’re Funny and went on to cause a comic stir asthe only white woman to feature on David Kau’s Blacks Only Tour. She is currently a writer for ZANews, an actress on FOBLO (a weekly satirical what’s happening guide for the Mother City) and a member of the Theatresports improv troupe.

Coda:

Coda has captivated audiences both near and far with its smooth blend of electric strings, afro-jazz sax, high-energy beats and soulful vocals. The all-female band‘s soccer song‚ ‘Blow Your Vuvuzela‘, was the unofficial anthem of the FIFA World Cup 2010 in Cape Town, and in 2012, the girls collaborated with top kwaito act DJ Cleo to put together the well-played crossover track ’Just to Hear Your Voice‘. They have also performed alongside Freshlyground and at major events, like the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the inimitable Desmond Tutu’s 75th birthday bash.

The group consists of Zami Mdingi (vocals), Galina Juritz (electric violin), Carol Thorns (electric cello), Judy Brown (sax) and DJ LuvChild.

iKapa Dance Theatre:

iKapa Dance Theatre is a neo-classical contemporary dance company and non-profit organisation that was founded in 2007 by Theo Ndindwa, a skilled dancer born in Gugulethu, and Tanya Arshamian, a ballet and contemporary dancer who trained in the UK. Recognising the lack of diversity in the South African dance industry – particularly for black artists in leading roles – the pair set out to create socially-relevant, engaging and inclusive productions.

With the hope of empowering those in disadvantaged communities through dance, they since have sought means to inspire and provide skills and employment for Mzansi’s youth - they offer an apprenticeship program, a youth dance theatre, commercial adult classes and a training and outreach school operating from Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Philippi and New Crossroads.

Aviva Pelham:

With a career spanning almost 40 years, Aviva Pelhma is one of South Africa’s most loved musical virtuosos. The Zimbabwean-born singer has performed both locally and abroad in operas, operettas, musicals, concerts and cabaret. The multi award-winning songstress is also a motivational speaker, director, lecturer, and radio host; Aviva lectures at the University of Cape Town and occassionally presents programmes on Fine Music Radio. In addition to performing for Queen Elizabeth II and Nelson Mandela, she has worked with illustrious conductors such as Janos Furst, Piero Gamba, Hubert Sudant, Victor Yampolsky and Reinhard Schwarz.

Tina Schouw

Tina Schouw is a singer, songwriter, musician and author who has gained acclaim on both local and international stages. The self-taught artist draws inspiration from various genres, including jazz, folk, pop and latin, and uses her performance as a tool for healing. She has performed at music festivals around the world and collaborated with a number of top local and international stars.  Apart from her musical career, this Cape Town born artiste is also a teacher and inspiration speaker passionate about helping women and children learn to appreciate themselves and find their own value in this world.

MORE ABOUT THE PERINANTAL MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT (PMHP)
The Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) provides counselling services and support for pregnant and post-natal women and girls who are experiencing psychological distress. The project engages with the mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, associated with gender-based violence, adolescent pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, refugee status and impaired bonding. The project is the only one of its kind in Africa and has been officially commended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The initiative is based at the University of Cape Town and works alongside the Departments of Health and Social Development in order to assist in the provision of counselling services and support.

MORE ABOUT THE HANOVER PARK SERVICE PROJECT
The Hanover Park Service Project aims to assist women in the Greater Athlone health district, a high-risk area  where 55% of people of working age are jobless and where certain suburbs claim some of the highest rates of attempted murder, drug and firearm-related crimes in the country. Considering the pervasiveness of substance and alcohol abuse, rape, child abuse, domestic violence and adolescent pregnancy within these communities, the social reality for many women is one of mental illness, violence and abuse. The PMHP’s project provides counselling services and support, and over the past two years of operation, team members have witnessed positive outcomes. Many women report having a more positive outlook on life and taking a greater pleasure in doing things after counselling.
