Chefs who share – the ART of giving

Eat your heart out and feel good about it at this annual event.

Take three of life’s greatest joys – food, art and the gift of giving – and combine them to get a rewarding feast of vitality in one event. Order a heavenly meal with a side of charity at the Chefs who share – the ART of giving fundraising event on Thursday, 10 September 2015 at the Cape Town City Hall.

This black-tie charity gala is back for the third time, and has managed to raise just under R4 million over the past two years for youth development in South Africa. The aim of the event is to garner support for talented young people and to fundraise for two youth development charities: the MAD Leadership Foundation and Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.

On the evening, 14 of the country’s top chefs (including Rudi Liebenberg from Belmond Mount Nelson and Scot Kirton from La Colombe) will work with seven talented sommeliers to create a tantalising menu for 252 guests. In addition, some of South Africa’s best artists (including Richard Scott, and Lionel and Anton Smit) will donate their work to the charity auction.

Gerry Elsdon and Jeremy Mansfield will be the MCs at the gala, with Iain Banner presiding over the auction. All of the proceeds from ticket sales and the auction will be given to the two charities. Chefs who share also has an on-going ‘Veggie Box Initiative’ that provides nutritious meals to children, educates them about healthy foods and helps develop sustainable vegetable gardens in underprivileged areas.

This year, the organisers are launching the Chefs who share – Young Chef Award, which will be given to a promising young chef. Invitations were sent to 75 restaurants around the country, inviting them to nominate their best rising culinary talents, who were asked to create a canapé to feature at the event on the night. From these entries, seven finalists have been chosen to cook alongside the chefs at the event. One winner will be selected, who will win the opportunity to travel to Europe and work in a Michelin-starred restaurant for a few days, as well as visit the Moët & Chandon headquarters in France.

If you are unable to attend the event, you can still bid for some artworks by a few of South Africa’s younger up-and-coming artists from the Little Artist School in Johannesburg. Bids can be placed in a silent auction by SMSing the lot number and your bid amount to +27 (0)81 875 7180 any time from now to the end of the event. The artworks can be viewed at Chefswhoshare.com.
