If your love for the ocean is deep and you’re looking for some gnarly entertainment that will float your boat, then look no further than the Cape Town Pro surfing competition. Presented by Quiksilver, this inaugural Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 rated event will ride the waves of Big Bay in Bloubergstrand from Friday, 6 to Sunday, 8 May 2016.
The event is part of the World Surf League’s Qualifying Series which determines competitors’ ranking and seeding for international competitions. That means that over 70 of South Africa’s top wave riders will pull into the Mother City for this weekend tournament, and show the rest of us how it’s done while competing for prize purses worth up to R30 000.
The Cape Town Pro will also host three A-rated Pro Surf Tour (PST) events for Under 18s on Friday, 6 May 2016 with R5000 up for grabs in each division. Not only will the winners walk home with the cash, but they will qualify for QS events too.
“We are really happy to add the Cape Town Pro presented by Quiksilver to the WSL (World Surf League) Africa calendar and thank all those who have made it possible,” says Colin Fitch, Operations Manager for WSL Africa, which is sanctioning the event. “Hosting rated events in Africa is vital for the careers of our local members and gives them the opportunity to qualify for WSL events worldwide,” he says.
So watch the big wave wipeouts and mad skills of the best surfers in the country with your own eyes, or if you feel like you have what it takes to own the water, submit your entry (details provided below) and hang ten with some surfing legends.
