“Part science fair, part trade fair and part something entirely new” – these are the words used to describe the Cape Town Mini Maker Faire, which will be back with a bigger and better showcase from Friday, 26 to Sunday, 28 August 2016 at the Cape Town Science Centre in Observatory. This local division of the revolutionary international Maker Movement showcases the best in design, technology, arts, crafts and everything in between. A tribute to the ‘makers’, the movement celebrates those people dedicated to the act of creation and the art of innovation.
With over 60 local innovators and partners on show, the exhibits at this year’s fair will range from home-made drones and robots to mini rockets, radios and electric vehicles. There will also be amazing art installations (such as the AfrikaBurn art cars), handmade crafts and fashion projects to inspire your inner-creator.
This market takes a hands-on approach, so you can look forward to testing your flying skills in the enclosed drone zone, taking part in interactive cement workshops, or joining classes on upcycling defunct home appliances.
Conceptualised in San Francisco in 2006, the Maker Faire movement has since evolved into hundreds of independently featured affairs around the world. This year, attendees can anticipate being overwhelmed by beautiful hand-made artefacts in all shapes and forms – from science innovations and experimentation to new feats of engineering, art, performance and craft.
Placing a spotlight on DIY and technology, the faire is all about bringing people with a passion for learning, collaboration and creativity together. Whether you’re a crafter, hobbyist, artist, tech guru, scientist, engineer, author, inventor or just a fundi of fine things, this is a market with a difference you don’t want to miss.
