Brass Swell Vol. 2

A little jol sans le tourists…

The locals of Kalk Bay are flooded with tourists every summer, especially over the Christmas period. Well, on Saturday, 7 January 2017, 7th Son, Grassy Spark and the West Coast Wolves are teaming up at the Brass Bell to bring a little local talent to the Brass Bell.

All three bands proudly hail from the Mother City, and they can’t wait to party into 2017 with you all! Brass Swell Vol. 1 totally sold out and was an epic night all around, so here is to Vol.2. These talented musicians have a variety of sounds, so whether you like kicking it to ska, or you’re more of a rock-inclined individual, these groups have it all!

7th Son released their first full length album, Ontology, in 2009 to an immense local success. The band is made up of five dudes, all dedicated to creating an authentic and relatable sound that people love listening to! Namely, these musical wizards and ska rock experts are Nic Gaud, Myles McDonald, Simon Ackerman, Miggs Auer and Nick Ornellas(at least that’s what their Facebook page says). Have a listen to the kind of stuff you’re in for:

Grassy Spark, with their obvious humour, started in 2012 from their mutual love of ska. This love has lead them to fuse this genre with a selection of others to make a totally unique sound. They have collaborated with the internationally recognised Kommetjie local, Jeremy Loops, where they saw massive success in SA as well as playing big festivals like Rocking the Daisies. Oh, did we mention that they were one of the opening acts for UB40 on their recent SA tour? I’m sure they enjoyed a few glasses of Red, Red Wine with Ali, Astro and Mickey. Here is a little taster of what they can do:

Finally, the line-up of this epic event is completed with the West Coast Wolves. These punk rockers have mixed their favourite genre with a very interesting mix of others which have created not just a locally unique sound, but maybe even an international one! They’ve incorporated folk, rock and event Celtic styles of music. It’s all very well to say that they create new genres, but do they do it well? Simple answer: yes. Long answer: yes, but go and see for yourself.
