Big Bad Wolf Pictures Presents Our City Film Project

Head to the V&A for a movie session with a difference

A new short film festival is always big news, and this November, Big Bad Wolf Productions debut their filmmakers collective at Cinema Nouveau at the V&A Waterfront. Patrons will be able to enjoy selected short films on both Saturday, 18 and Sunday, 19 November 2017 from 12pm to 10pm.

The festival consists of 53 short films, produced by 89 filmmakers from over 80 cities across the world. In total, the festival received 2310 film submissions, and the 53 finalists are, in their eyes, the best of the bunch. As an added bonus, 49 of those 53 films will be premiering in Africa for the first time at the festival. From the selected films, a winner of the following categories will be selected by a judging panel: Best Fiction Short, Best Documentary, Best Artistic Short and Best Animation. The very special Audience Award will be given to the film that auidences across the world voted as the best.

The theme for this years festival is LGBT. All the films selected to be part of the festival put the spotlight on the LGBT community and the problems and stigma they face.

SIX FILMS NOT TO MISS AT THE 2017 OUR CITY FILM PROJECT

This festival focuses on giving both the local and international filmmaking community an opportunity to showcase their work; with some being small budget creations crafted by amateurs, and therefore don’t have trailers. We will do our best to explain the six shorts we are most excited to see:

Confrontation (2017). This film, made in Cape Town, follows the story of a father who kicked his gay son out of their family home. Eight years later, he sees his son and is forced to face the decisions he made. Timothy Carlson sat in the director's chair for this 2017 drama.

Tellin’ Dad (2017). Tellin’ Dad recounts the story of a young man struggling to come out as gay to his parents. The film was produced in Liverpool and directed by Andre D Chambers.

Masquerading to Hell and Back (2017). Produced in Cape Town and directed by Sofia de Fay, this short  film is about two drag queens in the Mother City, and their reflections on the past. Being a drag queen in apartheid was a near impossibility, but the two protagonists recount how they managed it and what problems they were faced with.

We Did Not Fall From the Sky (2017). Purushi, Pratiksha and Shalu are trans-women (and best friends) living in London and trying to find their place in a strict Indian society. As is seen in so many cases, they are forced to make a living from sex work and begging. This short film was directed by Tabs Breese and Georgia Oakley.

Pink Dolphin (2017). In memory of the 49 lives taken during the Orlando shooting last year, this film chronicles the life of the only Pink Dolphin in the ocean. The Pink Dolphin is teased and assaulted by the other seas creatures. This animated film was produced in the US, and directed by Tuo Kan.

Wajood (2017). A young trans-woman living in Mumbai fights all kinds of stereotype to pursue her ambition to be an auto-rickshaw driver. Her community is horrified, and she begins a quest to fight her inner demons and the expectations her community has. This short was directed  by Vishal Srivastava.
