Two of South Africa’s leading alternative rock bands, Zebra & Giraffe and Gangs of Ballet, have joined forces for a countrywide tour that they’ve aptly called #BestDayEver. The local favourites will be playing at several venues in and around Cape Town, including The Assembly on Friday, 13 December 2013.
This is Zebra & Giraffe’s first fully fledged summer tour, and fans of the band will be happy to hear that the #BestDayEver concerts will include some new material from their upcoming EP. The Jo’burg-bred group first caught the attention of listeners with their 2008 debut record, Collected Memories, which earned a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Rock Album. Since then, Zebra & Giraffe has been a constant on national radio stations, with singles like ‘The Inside’, ‘I’ll Blame You’ and ‘Sons’ receiving liberal airplay. And though they have also opened for major international acts, including The Killers, Snow Patrol and Oasis, the quartet seems extra excited about the 16-stop spell with fellow local musos.
“Touring with Gangs of Ballet is going to be awesome,” said Zebra and Giraffe founding member and lead vocalist Greg Carlin. “They’ve become good friends over the past year, and I think the double headlining bill is going to be a treat for fans of both bands!”
Relative newbies Gangs of Ballet released their first full-length album in September 2013; although, they had already been making waves with a self-titled debut EP containing a track called ‘Hello Sweet World’. The single received major airplay on VH1 USA and was used as the opening theme for the music channel’s reality series Dr Drew’s Rehab. The boys from Durban have become instant favourites with alt-rock lovers all over thanks to their intriguing melodies and piano-fuelled mash-ups of electronic, pop and dance music.
Needless to say, with these two mega talented bands on the bill, it’s perfectly fitting that the tour is titled #BestDayEver: anyone going to see a show can definitely expect nothing less.
