Agri-Expo Livestock Show

A weekend of farmyard fun for the whole family awaits in the Stellenbosch Winelands

Leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and head out to the Boland Winelands for a farm-style fiesta that’s perfect for the entire family. What are we on about? We’re talking about the inaugural Agri-Expo Livestock show that is set to transform the Sandringham venue outside of Stellenbosch into a truly South African county fair-esque extravaganza from Thursday, 6 to Saturday, 8 November 2014.

While largely catering to the Cape’s agricultural society with a multitude of breed championships, this first-time affair also has a range of activities, including cooking demonstrations, educational talks, dog jumping displays and an ice cream eating competition, ideal for visitors both young and old.

Of course, it goes without saying that breeders, pastoral product producers and farmers should make a point of attending, as Agri-Expo CEO Johan Ehlers aptly points out, “Agri-Expo Livestock 2014 is much more than the showing of animals. It is the ideal opportunity for exhibitors to market their products to a target audience and provides valuable networking opportunities in the livestock industry”.

What’s more, the three-day do will also feature the Agriworks Farmers Expo where farmers can check out the latest developments, technology, equipment and more in the farming world.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT 2014 AGRI-EXPO LIVESTOCK IN STELLENBOSCH

BREED CHAMPIONSHIPS: Farmer Browns and average Joes alike can check out prize animals from across South Africa strutting their stuff in the NOVA Show Arena. International experts will be on hand to weigh up the beautiful bovines and to determine which creatures walk away with ABSA Dairy Queen and the BKB Red Meat King and Queen crowns. What’s more, youngsters will be dressed to the nines to present their finely prepped and groomed animals at the Santam Youth Show in the Nova Arena.

COOKING DEMOS: The Woolworths Dairy Pantry and Meat Kitchen will host cooking demos and informational sessions throughout the weekend. Learn more about which meat cuts suit dishes best and get to grips with tricky cooking skills, like the art of deboning, from Tomis Abbattoir’s red meat experts. Attendees can also discover new and creative ways of using dairy products and can return home with some inspired ideas about how these refrigerator essentials can add a brand new delicious dynamic to a stale culinary repertoire.

FOOD COURT: As a close relative of the uber popular and lauded SA Cheese Festival, the Agri-Expo Livestock Show will host a similar food court where festival-goers can enjoy a languid lunch or chill session between activities.

FARM-STYLE ENTERTAINMENT: Last, but certainly not least, the Santam Display Arena is set to feature a number of entertaining highlights over the three days. Visitors can check out the highly energetic dog jumping competition or simply indulge their love for frozen dairy at the ice cream eating competition. Not to mention, the Youth Show learners will be on hand to show interested kids how to care for, groom and, finally, lead a goat or calf around the ring as they do for competitions.

AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Great for school groups or little ones who barely leave the concrete jungle, the three-day event will also host a number of educational  interactive activities geared toward both young and old.

So, tear yourself away from the urban grind, shut down that Farmville game and head out to this family-friendly agricultural affair in the Winelands. We’ve only touched on a few of the many activities taking place on the day; for more information, visit Livestock.org.za.

HANDY TIPS FOR 2014 AGRI-EXPO LIVESTOCK IN STELLENBOSCH

Given that this farm fiesta is an outdoor event, visitors are encouraged to dress accordingly and wear comfortable walking shoes. Keeping in mind the unpredictability of the Cape’s weather, don’t forget to bring along your sunglasses and sunscreen or umbrella and wellies in case the weather turns. Parents, please note that it’s best to carry your little one in a sling or baby backpack, because traversing the terrain and navigating through the crowds is about as much fun as peak hour traffic is. Also, remember to bring along a cooler bag for all your dairy goodies and wet wipes.
