Friday, 14 July 2017 is Bastille Day and Cape Town knows how to celebrate! Aside from the Franschhoek Bastille Day festivities, the Playhouse Theatre in Somerset West are also hosting an event for the French holiday.
Apart from wine and cheese, what do the French love? That’s right; music. The Playhouse Theatre has chosen this year to have a musical affair that will delight all who attend. A French Affair will see local musicians tackle pieces of music made famous by Charles Aznavour, Edith Piaff, Yves Montand and even some songs from Les Miserables. What better way to enjoy the national French holiday than with wine, music and fellow francophiles?
The two musicians that will be taking the reigns of the evening are Monique Hellenberg and Tony Drake. Monique Hellenberg is amongst the most successful jazz singers to come out of Cape Town. She currently teaches singing at UCT, and performs as a backing singer for The Rudimentals. Monique has won numerous awards, and she even participated in The Voice South Africa this year! You know Bobby McFerrin? Well, she has sung with him and also toured parts of Asia with Andrew Young. This woman has done it all, and she’s just as fabulous as you would expect.
Tony Drake is a piano/keyboard master, and we don’t say that very often. He is a composer and producer as well as a performer and he’s been at it for over 35 years. That’s a lot of industry experience. He has worked with Robbie Jansen, Andrew Young, P.P Arnold, Andre de Villiers, Rocking Horse, Zayn Adam and even Heinz Winckler. Tony Drake has recorded over 150 albums at his home studio, and we cannot wait to hear the musical magic that he has in store for us at The Playhouse Theatre this Bastille Day!
