First performed in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar became an instant worldwide hit. The musical - a rock opera - with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice is based on the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The show, that opened on 12 October 1971 in New York, was the first musical by Rice and Lloyd Webber to be produced on the professional stage.
