The first Homeless World Cup took place in July 2003 in Austria.
18 countries participated and were completely formed by homeless persons or by persons making their income on selling streetpapers. There were 109 games played for the tournament, as more than 20,000 spectators watched. Team Austria were the winners.
As a testament to its success, 31 of the 141 players from the 2003 tournament now hold regular jobs.
