Inspired by photographer Ed Suter’s latest book, “Sharp Sharp”, the Street Style exhibition showing at the Freeworld Design Centre until Friday, 10 August 2012 is a vibrant and colourful journey documenting the art, fashion and attitude that mark South Africa’s pedestrian ways, city centre corridors, and streetside sidewalks.
Ed Suter, along with graffiti artist Mak1one, fashion editor, Asanda Sizani, and food stylist Jade de Waal have each showcased their interpretation of SA street style through the creation of individual design pods. These canvases communicate distinct messages through the chosen media of each of these talented creatives.
Suter examines individual contributions to our city streets; Mak1one has a look at the positive effect of graffiti; Sizani devotes her canvas to the importance of fashion to the urban woman and de Waal dishes up commentary on the issue of food transport in the nation.
The exhibition caters to all ages and all walks of life in an effort to engage the audience in a discussion about the definition of street style and how it influences society.
Ed Suter
At the age of eight, Suter was given a camera with which he documented what he was leaving behind as his family packed up to leave the UK for SA shores. “It’s the one thing that has been constant in my life,” he says, referring to photography. It thus comes as no surprise that Suter took on this lively project, and took to the streets armed with his trusty companion, his camera, to capture South Africa’s inexhaustible diversity.
The Freeworld Design Centre is open weekdays from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and entry to the Street Style exhibition is free to the public.
Check out the short film on Ed Suter’s process for capturing style on our streets.
