In 1939 an unknown African man wrote a song that became an international hit.
That song was Solomon Linda’s Mbube which became better known as The Lion Sleeps Tonight, the theme tune to Disney’s hugely successful animated film The Lion King.
Since then, countless more South African musicians have produced world-class hit songs and in a tribute to them, Mike McCullagh has produced Rockin’ the Rainbow.
Rockin' the Rainbow offers a platform to South African songwriters, spanning the era between the early 60’s and the birth of the rainbow nation.
The host for the evening will be Keenan Arrison who will introduce the audience to each song and the talented cast will get them dancing in the aisles. Hear old time favourites such as Four Jacks and a Jill's "Master Jack" and Miriam Makeba's "Click Song".
Go back in time with eVoid, Ballyhoo, Rabbit, Pacific Express, Marcalex, Mango Groove, Bright Blue, Sipho "Hotstix" Mabusa, Johnny Clegg and Freshly Ground, among others.
And the lighter side of music will also make an appearance with comedy-songs by singers such as Jeremy Taylor and David Kramer will also make an appearance.
