Avid fungi foragers, eccentric foodies and forest lovers will once again descend on Delheim Estate in Stellenbosch for the annual Wild Mushroom Hunt, a fun-filled, eye-opening event that aims to teach attendees about the edible fungus and that takes place over two events this year: Thursday, 15, and Friday, 16 June, and Friday, 30 June and Saturday, 1 July 2017.
The fleshy, fruiting wild mushroom has become the highlight of many menus, and, under the guidance of Delheim’s Nora Sperling-Thiel and the ‘Mushroom Guru’ himself Gary Goldman, guests are invited to scatter through the estate’s secret woodlands in search of the earthen delicacies. The hunting expedition starts with an informative and interesting lecture on wild ‘shrooms before the forest frolicking and foraging kicks off. Afterwards, the hunters head to the farm’s restaurant to treat their taste buds to a three-course lunch of wild mushroom dishes paired with Delheim wine.

“No one should fear the fungi! I will give a short lecture on edible and poisonous mushrooms before we trot off into the forest, so that you know how to identify the good, the bad and the ugly and really enjoy this magical spot at Delheim. There are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no bold, old mushroom hunters,” shares Gary, AKA the ‘Mushroom Fundi.’
Aside from giving participants a chance to enjoy the mystique and excitement of the search, the aim of the mushroom hunt is to teach foodies and foragers how to identify the many different species. In short, you’ll learn to tell your pine-ring from your porcino (or porcini), and you’ll also get to sample the exotic flavours in top-notch dishes.
