The world''s most beautiful marathon takes runners on a Cape Town journey

The Two Oceans Marathon always takes place on the Saturday of the Easter Weekend, therefore the race date changes every year. The Easter weekend traditionally starts on the first Friday after the first full moon after 21 March every year.

The race started in 1970 and was never intended to be anything more than a training run to enable Cape Town runners to prepare for the Comrades Marathon.

The 26 runners who set out on the 35-miler from Impala Park were not aware that they were the pioneers of an event that 37 years later would attract more than 9 000 entrants. Entry fee was 50 cents and 15 people finished the race.

Dirkie Steyn won the event in 3:55:50 and ran barefoot.

The 2007 event saw over 20 000 people taking part in the 56km ultra and 21km half marathon. Including the fun run that takes place on Good Friday, entry totals reached over 25 000 people.
